So what's the verdict on this pump. I'm thinking about adding two on my large tank coming soon.

I see lots of used one for sale which makes me a little doubtful about its performance.

I have an MP60 and two brand new MP40s so if I go this route I can just get one more MP60.

Any feedback is appreciated!

I don't have long term experience with it as its running on my new build right now. I can tell you that the build quality is not as good as the MP's. One thing I really love is how the gyre sits up high on the tank and it's low profile. I hardly even notice it!

If ecotech made the same kind of pump, i'd buy the ecotech.
But since they don't, and this is the only thing of it's kind available, I stick with it. The 150.
Nothing else matches that kind of wide flow and flow pattern. Doesn't reach all the way across my 7' tank. 5' is about it before it seriously dies off.
Couldn't bring myself to buy a second (build quality isn' as good, lots of small fragile parts), so I put a Tunze 6105 on the other side. That way at least one of my pumps could have a battery backup and be controlled by my profilux.
And then I added a Sea Swirl on each return which is awesome. Should have gotten those sooner.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Jason-
Yeah I like the low profile look as well. I saw the pump in action when visiting ocean life. nick is running one in the large SPS tank.

Dennis-
I'm not crazy about the small components, could be hassle to clean. I clean my MPs at least once a month. I don't want to see any algae on the pumps. :)

I think I should stick to MPs since I want to hook it up to Apex.

Gyres are awesome, you just need to know how to clean them.
The new Generation are even better, less components to clean, they also equipped the newer Gyres with a better Magnet Grip Pads and stronger Pump Propellers.
The Gyres can run through your apex as well all you need is a module from CoralVue to do so and you can load up all the MP modes or the Tunze modes or both.
I like my Gyre since Sept of last year, now I like it even better on the Apex, next week I get the new model XF150 in.
Will let you know the difference when it runs the Diesel tank.
Oh and if you run it through the Tunze program it moves a lot more water than the old or standard Gyre controller.
Working through the Apex you can adjust from 0 to 100%, all the modes on different times a day and what I like the most is a Night mode.

I know you like the high tech stuff but if you decide to go the Vortech route get the new QD's.
I'm testing a new QD mp40 and it's dead silent, what a difference between the none QD's.
Just you know.

Thanks Ben. Yeah that would be cool to control through Apex.

Garbage, I had to replace the pump because the wire separated from the motor exposing the wires (known problem, new models have it fixed). I clean it but they don't go back together well. I have had nothing but problems with it, I unplugged it and stopped myself from throwing it in the street. I will quote Dennis and say that if eco tech made it I would buy it again. Coralvue has managed to put a great design into a crap real world application, Nick has no problems with his and I have had nothing but problems with mine. A few of us SPS guys have all come to the same conclusion.

When did the new version of the Gyre come out? Is this now version 3 that you are talking about Diesel? I know there was the original one, then they did a upgrade with better magnets?

I don't know of any actual "versions".
They basically just keep changing/adding stuff as they go and as problems arise.

New version isn't in stores yet, but will be soon.
I'll talk tomorrow to CoralVue to see if I get a release date on the pump and the Apex module for store sales.
I had the first ever beta design and replaced it with a first store release version both did awesome for me.
One Gyre replaced 5 MP40's on my tank, I added a second Gyre XF130 but it kinda over did the purpose on the first one.
My flow wasn't effective as with just one Gyre.
With the Apex module you can program them to sink with each other, in that case I going to have a total 100% effective flow for 10 min from one side and than it turns from the other side.
IMO Really it doesn't matter what kind of pump you use to grow corals as long the flow is effective, with just one pump or 5 or more, what ever you feel happy with.
I really like the QD from Vortech, just a total difference on the old Vortech MP40's.
If for some reason my marketing deal get stopped I go back in a hard beat to Ecotech pumps.
I just wanted to try it and see for myself if it was true that the Vortech QD was really a lot better, for now I just keep it as a backup pump.

I pulled mine off yesterday.
It started making a loud noise... took a look... two fins broken on both impellers each. Last straw.
Put my MP60 back on. Didn't realize I missed it. Might upgrade to the QD driver.

Why did you miss it?

Why did you miss it?
It's the complete opposite of the Gyre.
So simple and easy to clean, great build quality, great controller, battery backup, beastly amount of flow that never declines (I can't turn it up much past half way)... only downside is that it's noisy. But a QD driver upgrade would help a lot.

I did too, broken fins and just didn't sit right in the seals. My neighbors came to make sure everything was ok when I threw it in the street. Mp60 is rocking, I need to do the QD upgrade as well.

I've come -><- this close to buying one a couple times but just could never do it. Everyone I've talked to that owns them has issues after awhile. My two MP40s and two MP60s have been flawless for 3 years now.

EcoTech fo life! :D

So............ it's me against y'all :fencing:
I love my Gyre especially with the IceCap Apex module, lots more possibilities for flow and it's not that hard to clean.
In most cases we just get LAZY and SPOILED in this hobby and that's just a fact.
I clean my Gyre every month and yes it has more parts but really difficult to put it back together............ in this hobby............ not really!!
Don't get me wrong Ecotech pumps are awesome too and I still run them on my frag tanks, fact to the matter is that I got my hands on a MP40QD.... :jaw:
You don't hear a thing :nono:
That said I needed to know how true it is to upgrade the WES to QD, not so difficult........... just buy a QD Driver and a QD wet side and your done, right??
Wrong........ I tested it on my older MP40's and each one of them was still loader than the brand new MP40QD.
They were a little less in noise without the upgrade but IMO not worth to do so.
Talked today to Ecotech just to find out if they shipped my Vectra and briefly ask them how come it's not living up to the QD upgrade.
Their answer is that it has to do how old the MP40 is that you want to upgrade, if it's less than 6 months it will make a difference but if they are older than a year you still have to deal with the wear and tear from the dry side bearings.
So I guess I will buy two more QD's for the frag tanks.
