Spring is almost here time to do some collecting!! Who is coming with me? Just wondering if anyone does any collecting in galveston? I have been collecting for about three years now and I am always amazed at what you can get. I have some new tactics i want to try but need help. So who is up for a beach day or night?

I'm in. I have been wanting to do this for a while but have no clue what I am doing. When are you thinking?

Cody, collecting critters from Galveston for your tank.

Depends on what you want to catch. Mostly just dragging a dip net and digging through seaweed. But i have a seine net that i want to pull and a few other frankenstein nets that i made.

What area of Galveston do you go to for collecting? We usually take the ferry (kids love it) and go to Bolivar Peninsula and there are tons of shrimp out there that are different colors - not the peppermint shrimp others usually see/go for.

My wife and I would really enjoy going out there though!

Sounds good. If you are going to come you will need a fishing license, a minnow net with small holes, gloves, old clothes, and not afraid to get wet. I have a couple of nets i will share. I was just seeing if i had any interest to go but i geuss i should have known better. If you are new at it i will try and pick a day with slack tide so the waves are not to bad the rocks get slippery. let me check the forecast but probably at least a couple of weeks so the water can warm up.

Depends on what you want to catch. You can go on the( rock groins for peps, blennies, and a few reef fish, etc)(,go to the bay for gobies, blennies , porcellin crabs, toad fish, skillet fish, etc)(in the surf for bigger fish and sargassum with uncountable things to catch shrimp, crabs, juvi reef fish, etc.) As far as where i go is from the east end of the island to about 12 mile road or pirates beach.(beach and bay side) here is a website to give you a better idea of what is there to catch. txmarspecies.tamug.edu/index.cfm

Have any of you guys been before? If you are not experienced with collecting on the jetties/dykes/rock groin than i would rather wait till after march. The wind dies down alot by then. All month of march it usually blows around a constant 14 to 20 mph with higher gust. I dont wont to have to jump in freezing water if i don't have too. (not really freezing but 60 degrees is to cold for me at least past my knees)

Lol! Well that makes two of us. Ive never been, but Im eager as a beaver to get my "feet wet". If it is best, then Im okay to wait. But I also dont mind wind, water, and colder temps.

Im game whenever, just let me know!

I'm a surfer and have a wet suit, booties, etc. I've been collecting a few times for my reef, but I'm also an angler. I've fished and surfed from Louisiana (Johnson's bayou) to Brownsville, TX and even the other way from Pensacola to Panama City, FL. Also been on the Atlantic side as well.

I have seen several reef related things while surfing and here in Texas, my favorite place to collect or look are the Jetty's, Texas City Dike, and the beach front of any beach (For Sargassum seaweed [especially in the summer months]).

One place that is a favorite of mine and where I've had more luck than just about anywhere is a good ol' boat ramp. They're easy to access, have lighting, and if late at night- they're mostly empty. I like to use a fine mesh cast net along with a long handle fine mesh net. The cast net will get hung, but we send the newbies in to untangle it.

You would be shocked at what can be collected in a boat ramp.

Tektite can tell you, there's a lot of anemones too. I just don't care for any of them really. I saw a whole clan of them on the Texas Dike not long ago. I'll see if I can find Tektite's anemone pictures from Texas.

That makes me feel better. I just dont want anyone to fall off the rip tide pulls pretty hard this time of year. So lets see what we can put together and get at it. I went on the bay side yesterday and caught a few pipe fish, stretch jaw blenny, naked goby, darter goby, bunch of pods and some sea lettuce (ulva) macro algae.

I used to steelhead fish with a fly rod on the Clearwater and Snake rivers in Idaho. Slippery rocks, cold water (35 degrees), and lots of current. I have also been to Galveston numerous times and am quite confident that I can handle it. Next weekend?

Im cautious to add anything to my tank since about 10 years ago i added a least puffer i caught in Tiki Island. He took a good chomp out of my 2 clownfish.
I do have a fishing license and experience in the water. If you need some help let me know.

The Jetty's will have a rip on each side sucking out until you reach the end of the wall. Then depending on which way the tide is going that day....east to west or west to east...will depend on which way it will take you from there.

Do not fight the rip if you ever fall in. Let it take you to the end of the jetty, then you'll hit the main rip and it will take you which direction it's going.

roughly 5-10 yards from the jetty wall after you've reached the end, you'll be able to just swim straight in. Just tred water until it gets you out there. 2-4 minutes. If you fight the rip, you'll wear yourself out.

Heres Tektite's pics:

We need to go when the weather is mild and we have a weak north wind. It will be flat and glassy. Anything south, southeast, east, etc...is gonna chop it up unless the wind is very light.

Can we take a vote on what the best day of the weekend to go would be for everybody. Would be cool to get a large group.
