I want to make a 29 gal tank for anemone and clowns, maybe a couple of other fish. Do I need a skimmer and/or live sand?

Not really. Depends on how many clowns and what you’re trying to accomplish. Like what water parameters are you wanting to target and overall aesthetics. You can control a tank like that with water changes.

I’m thinking that for the most part, the anemone will dictate what I need to do and what to add. I have a 75 gl reef and I really want to have an anemone with clowns and don’t want to add the anemone in the 75 gal. So, for the most part, it’s going to be a couple of clowns for sure, and maybe 4 other low maintenance fish, along with one or two anemone.

I have a 29g anemone tank with about 60-70 nems in it. I don't run anything other than a hob filter and hob skimmer. The tank runs so clean that the skimmer never takes anything out of the water but I do think it does a good job of oxygenating the water for the nems and fish.

This is only about 1/3 of the tank. There are so many nems that they are stuck to the glass because there isn't any rock space available.

60-70?!?!? Nice! Is hob a brand? Sorry. I’ve been back at this for only a couple of months and after a 10 year break. If it’s not a brand, what brand are you using?

HOB just stands for "hang on back." I can't recall the brand of filter but its just a cheapo from Petco with a sponge filter. Probably paid $20 bucks for it. Something like Fluval or Aquaclear. Just something big enough to keep the water moving so that i don't have to add a power head. Remember, all intakes have to be covered in a nem tank. For mine, I just cut out a foam sleeve for this one and slid it over the intake.

The skimmer is an Aquamaxx.

I've seen this tank first hand... it's very impressive and very cool!

For the 29g get the Aquaclear 70 and the filter basket upgrade from Intank Aquatics. Mount the filter on the side of the tank instead of the back and it will create a nice gyre like flow through the tank. The upgraded media basket will allow you run all sorts of media types in the filter unit including ceramic media like custom cut pieces of Brightwell Aquatics media blocks and such. I had this setup on my 20g frag tank and it moved a ton of water and servicing the filter was a breeze with the upgraded media basket.

Then all you need is a small wavemaker pump like a Jeabo PP4 or something like that to increase flow in the middle of the tank.
