To increase biodiversity in my tank I bought some live rock, (more the better!) and I saw one of these buggers eating some coralline off of the live rock. My question is, do asterina starfish hurt or damage sps coral? My tank will be primarily acropora and sps and I wouldn’t like to take any chances. Thanks

Hmm great question I’d like to know as well, I have 2 stars in my 14, mainly softies and aptasia lol. But I do have some acro frags in there. It’s acting as my frag tamk for the time being.

From my understanding, the vast majority of them are harmless. There are some that have a greenish back, and they will eat SPS, but the brown/tan ones do not. I found one of the greenish ones, which had gotten a little bigger than the typical ones, on a coral once and sent it to the great aquarium in the sky, but the others I leave alone.

I have never had any issues with them but they have always been tan/white/brown. But that info is good to know Frank! I definitely would toss any that I found attached to coral near any living tissue.
