I was given this tank from a really good frind of mine and I noticed it neaded an overhaul. The stand sat in a couple of feet of water during Harvey so i don't trust it, Going to be a big undertaking for a newb but I know I know i got this. plan is to reseal everthing, repaint trim to get rid of the ugly wood grain, build new stand and build custon sump from two 40 gal breeders. hopefully put an apex on her and have a beautiful display for my family and friends,

So here's some pics from the first day of work, stripped the old silicone and scraped on the built up gunk for a couple of hours. The bottom is 3/4 thick with 1/2 walls. I put it in furniture dollies to roll it around easier. Took it outside for a good pressure washing. I tried using vinegar to break down the what I'm gonna call "calcium"? But it didn't knock a dent in it whatsoever. My razor wouldn't even take it off. The tank was originally saltwater then switched to fresh.

It's an Oceanic systems tank and I have been looking for any info I can find on it too no avail. I guess they've gone belly up.

So yesterday @Crazyreef911 and I taped the tank off and took a second shot at siliconing the big ole tank. I tried to do it by myself saturday but by the time i went to smooth the silicone it had already started drying. Super discouraging but i waited and scraped it all off again and took a second wack at it. the first tape job was spot on and measured to perfection..... the second one not so much. Never the less we taped it of a second time and it didnt turn out to shabby. Today i painted the trim and and anxious to get some water in her tomorrow. I figured I'd give it a full 48 hours until i fill it just to be sure its cured all the way through. Heres some pics of the progress so far. Reefer for scale... 20190322_193147.jpg 20190322_193157.jpg 20190322_205206.jpg 20190322_205213.jpg 20190323_162014.jpg 20190322_193147.jpg 20190322_193157.jpg 20190322_205206.jpg 20190322_205213.jpg 20190323_162014.jpg 20190323_162038.jpg 20190323_162044.jpg 20190323_162052.jpg 20190323_162102.jpg 20190324_171949.jpg

Plan to cover the corner overflows and add a ghost style?
No, the corner overflows don't really bother me. But I do plan on drilling a couple more holes for a Herbie I want this tank super quite.

So I have an idea, if I wanted to do a bean animal could I put my emergency and one of the returns on one side and link the two overflows together in theory is should work?

Its been done but not recommended.

The water in the two overflows has to be “connected”.

Some folk have joined them together with a weir that spans between the two but at that point it’s just as easy to drill 3 holes and install a ghost type overflow.

The tank was free so I'm ahead, everything is currently in Houston as per UPS tracking, delivery is scheduled for Tuesday, the tank is soaking with vinegar at the moment to get it super clean before it's brought in the house. I still want to build a new stand though but I don't think that'll happen until next weekend.

OK! So its been a few days and the ups shipment came with no casualties. Very impressed with the sump besides the fact whoever stuck the level sticker on it left a bag wrinkle which is driving me crazy. The skimmer is alot bigger than i expected and the pump alot smaller. I went with Ecotech for my return and flow pumps simply for the connectivity and networking capabilities. 20190402_185729.jpg 20190402_185746.jpg 20190402_201146.jpg 20190402_201149.jpg 20190402_201154.jpg 20190402_201200.jpg

I started building the new stand but I wanted it perfect so before I made three trips to home depot i jumped in fusion 360 "CAD" and built it to my likings. Also I was able to measure and do a count of how long and how many of each board i needed. I really like the stands for the Red Sea Reefer so i pretty much modeled it after that. 2X4 frame, 3/4 inch top and bottom and 1/4 inch sides. The top and sides are sanded red oak and the bottom is treated plywood. I got really luck and found the treated wood in the 70% off bin at Home Depot because of some damage which i didn't mind because I only needed a 24in by 7ft of it and the 3/4 red oak I got lucky and it had a small gouge in it and the lady in the lumber section also gave me 70% off on it too. All in all I got the lumber needed to build the stand for around 100 bucks! Here are the cad pics and the frame so far. So I got a little busy and never got around to finishing my build thread but I'll do my best to walk through it. Here's some pictures of the stand before paint. The doors are mdf and top and header are sanded oak. I used veneer strips to seal the edges of the mdf and it world really well.
