The difference is that I’m using black boxes. They’re 16”x8” of leds. The color doesn’t blend as well as those AIs but it’s not terrible. The trade off is less of a spotlight, however they’re still leds and create somewhat of a spotlight. Because they’re so much cheaper, you can blanket your tank with them then turn each unit down.
Cody you should really consider upgrading to G5’s if you like LED’s. The spread is has really come a long way. You don’t need to get the XR30’s. I’m fixing to buy 3 XR15’s for my new tank.

Of course their spread has come a long way. They started spreading out their arrays to copy the black boxes haha :p

I would take a black box over a radion any day. Even at the new BS price of $180 per vipraspectrum (I used to buy them $120 each, now they’re $180 after BRS’ video), I could put four of those fixtures over my tank and still have $80 in my pocket or have a single radion.

You go right ahead sir. I’ll throw 3 XR15’s and 4 T5’s over mine. :)

To each their own :)
There’s no doubt they work. I’ve used them in the past. I know a guy who has a very nice tank that runs them. The problem for me is they’re so peaky. We all know It’s not about PAR alone, but also light distribution. This is why every LED manufacturer including EcoTech has tried to mimic T5’s. So this begs the question Cody...why in the world would smart man like yourself want to run a fixture that you know is peaky. Corals like that even spread of light. If I gave you some Radion G5’s...let’s just be honest...those black boxes would not stay on your main tank. Even at 18” off the water...they still can’t touch a Radion. And just FYI...this test was conducted with a Gen 4. :D

Ah come on, you have seen the BRS review of the black boxes. Not all black boxes are the same, and the simple solution that BRS with their measuring equipment offered was to raise them and put more of them over your tank once you had the correct ones, which I don’t think you reprinted in your data pics.

Sorry for the late reply. Was labeling my RODI filters and membrane. Then my label maker went dead. I replaced the batteries and the tape ran out. Thank gosh I had batteries and tape.

Ok, show me the data. :)

Also include the superior black box LED’s that you’re referring to with their distribution graphs. :playball:

Cody always refers to our conversations as arguments. This is serious business man!!! No hurt feelings on my end.

I use the word argument because I haven’t found a better word yet. I like disagreeing with you, if that’s the word. It has kept me honest.

So long time no update. I have a canopy for more LEDs ready to go that I should finish soon and I recently had to break down a lot of my rocks to retrieve a piece of metal that fell at the base of the rocks and got lost. I think I’m going to use this opportunity to change around the rockscape. It would be nice to look at something different for a change.

Will do. I’m staring at my rockscape now wondering what to do. I have two islands and I’m thinking about converting them into one larger piece, but I don’t know. Choices choices.

Working on my new canopy now. I built it and primed it a while ago but just now got around to painting. A lot of thin coats of oil based enamel that’s cut with mineral spirits.

I’ll let it dry overnight and hit it with 320 grit tomorrow, hand sanding. Probably throw on a few more coats after that.

No work done today. It looked like it wanted to rain all day but nothing until just now. Anyway, I’m taking the window out of my fish room and putting the AC unit back on. It’s getting to warm to just let the outside air cool it anymore.
