Our plan was to drain our 20gl storage drum, fill a second time, and drain again, but then wait until the boil order expired to refill. We figure it is also a good a time as any to swap out for all new filters and media/resin at that time as well. Until then I will get my water from a LFS. Overkill? Maybe 🤷‍♀️, but I'm okay with that 😎 Thankfully we filled all our ATO reservoirs before we lost water so were good for a few more days.

So your saying basically flush 40 gallons and then wait for the boil order to end.

I'm running a BRS 6 stage - two carbon cartridges and two DI stages. Coincidently I just replaced the membrane and DI resins and did the sediment filter and carbon blocks last month so maybe have 100-120 gallons run through them so far.

Should I replace them again or let it ride?

I have these chlorine indicating strips whenever I get paranoid about chlorine/ chloramines in any of my water sources. Very inexpensive, fast, and easy to use.

I have a cheap pool test kit but am getting these strips once the kit expires. Really good tools for the OCD reefer :)

I disconnected my RO/DI system on sunday night just in case it freezes... im thinking im gonna wait till the water boil notice is over and then flush out the lines real good before plugging it in. also wanna make sure the water pressure in gonna be stable. Im still expecting that the first water i put through the system in gonna cause a wreck on all my filters and membranes anyway...

^^^yeah I would change the ro membrane after a good flush just for the heck of it.

My cousin is a virologist and we’ve had this conversation. Most pathogens won’t get by but some can, and if the city is telling us to boil water because it’s not treated properly, then advising people to forgo this step is irresponsible. Plus, have you seen the condition of some people’s rodi media??
This is not a campaign against RO filtration, just a word of caution in the current situation.
What is the micron size of the pathogens that make it through? :playball:

Some bacteria are very small, but most are about 1 micron or larger and the common RODI running 1 micron filters should get most of them, but it probably won’t get all of them. That’s just a guess.

Viruses on the other hand are much smaller and would be even harder to get. You will definitely reduce the amount in your water with a RODI. :)

Installing one of these would take care of this whole convo which I may well do. Cheaper than replacing all the filters and RO membrane.

I emailed back asking if we could boil it before use. Will update when I get a reply.

had to. My topoff container was empty. I made 10g for now. Also keep in mind I have a 20” chloramines buster on top of my other 6 stages.

thanks for sharing that info.

Yea I told him about my beefed up 10 stage with multiple high capacity carbon/chloramine filters. He still said no.

‘’We are really not sure what could be in the water but what we can confirm is if the city is saying do not use the water for those reasons, there must be some really nasty stuff in there like pathogens, parasites, organics, etc.
I would not advise to using the system with all the cautions of your water supply. “

Wound up with this.

organics will get filtered out by the RO membrane and carbon. Chloride and Chloramine get converted to harmless Chloride ions by chemical reaction with carbon. bacteria also too large to pass through membrane. viruses and pathogens that could possibly pass through the system will get rendered null by the UV component. That leaves only a mineral cartridge for a consistent flavor profile when making drinking/coffee watert or, if making DI water, ready a clean pure .003tds water for DI process. A cheap fix this is to complete the water purification process.

It's a liability thing. Unless they market their systems as removing pathogens they would never recommend you use it right now. A functional RO membrane will remove pathogens. The only concern would be damaged membranes or seals. But if your TDS is reading normal then your membrane is probably fine. You'd probably want to replace the filters once the boil notice is lifted just to be safe.

"Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are generally used to remove viruses and salt."

"These membranes are capable of removing particles (inorganics, bacteria, viruses) and dissolved compounds (salts, natural organic matter, compounds of emerging concern) very effectively."

"In principle, HPM processes (RO/NF) should provide a complete physical barrier to nanosized enteric viruses."
