Been using the same two mesh filter socks for about two and a half years now. They need to be changed every 2-3 days, and simply rinse them out in the sink with the hand sprayer. Then soak them in bleach water solution every 3-4 months.

Two felt filter socks and change on average 3 days. Two days, if I start to heavy feed a bit.

I clean them by machine washing, but first I do a full sanitize in the washer (just hot water no additives). Than cycle through with bleach only. After they come out and dry, I pre-rinse with RO/DI and do a smell test just to see if I can detect any chorine.

I don’t use any unless it’s cleaning time, and even then, I rarely use them.

Those that feed coral food, are y’all using filter socks too?

This stuff works great - reusable and easy to clean and cheap.

Why not do the bleach cycle first, then the hot water cycle? That way you get an extra rinse from the bleach?

I don't use any and feed both fish and corals heavily. I just put a filter cup filled with filter floss in while I'm cleaning, so like 1-2 times a month for about 3-4 hours.

Sorry, maybe I didn't explain in enough detail. The first washer cycle has nothing in it, its just to rinse out any residual detergents that could be in the washer.

The socks come out clean so I don't feel there is any additional washing is needed.

For those that use filter rollers, what has your experience been?

When those first hit the market, I didn’t like them. They’re too clean in my opinion. What are y’all’s nutrients at? Too low? How’s the water clarity?

In your situation, I’d probably be using one as well. My issue is too low nutrients. I actually dose nitrates.

I dose nitrates as well with my 4” Klir roller. I have Klir’s cap partially opened on the second filter cup opening and keep a ChemiPure Elite sack in the bottom.

I still would like to add a low micron filter in my last baffle to stop any micro bubbles from my skimmer to return pump.
