So many opinions on light. I think everyone has different constraints. For some it may be budget, performance, preference, bias or whatever. I personally like the light you get from T5 lights but the led’s bring the shimmer.
Cost aside, imo best is halides. They bring a full spectrum and you...
Did you say you’re using an API test kit? If you are serious bout finding out what’s going on, I would suggest you use Hanna testers or, alternatively, do an icp test. That should give you the information needed to pick a direction and make solid choices vs shooting in the dark. Just mho.
Basics.. contact the water co and get a report. It should tell you if they are adding chlorine, chloramine or whatever. Make sure you’re using a low ppm solids removal cartridge (1 micron or below) as the first stage. Then the carbon stage (s) can be wide open like 5ppm. If the carbon stages are...
I have a genny but it is always a pain to deal with. The generacs are nice but always seem to need service. In a pinch, and if you don’t want to spend 8-16k on that, an easy solution I came across (think it was a convo here with @foos) is a high power inverter. Hook it up to your car battery and...
If you can, Dump the lid and switch to a pendant led like Kessil or whatever. that should resolve the heat issue. It seems a lot of people mod the hood with stronger computer fans (around $30) and/or additional vents but looks like you already figured that out lol.
The other noteworthy thing that deserves a closer look is the way water chemistry is handled. The basic 2 part and 3 part now works so well that a lot of people have given up their Ca reactors and moved to dosing elements. The availability and accuracy of ICP tests has improved as well allowing...
Yea it took me a minute to get a grasp of what’s new. Everything has really come a long ways. The waver makers/ powerheads are super and the understanding of how to approach a successful reef tank has really been fine tuned.
Of particular note gyre technology. The way it moves water is...
As far as I know, rinsing only makes a difference if the substrate is seeded. I rinsed and used a pvc pipe to the bottom of the tank and a 4”-2” reduction to sort create a funnel. Worked pretty well. Could aim deposits as needed. Minimal dust and disturbance.
