You're gonna put roughly 320lbs on it. Edit this... plus sand and rock... more around 380lbs.

2x4s and an hour and you can have a solid unfinished stand that you can skin anytime. Get the right materials and you can build a furniture grade in a day.

I’ve had 40 breeders on this before without issues. They’re actually pretty strong. There’s been several other reefers do it too. I have a picture I’ll post up. It’s probably not rated for it, but many people have done it.

Risk vs Reward

Not even close. Any maintenance performed will place you at extreme risk including just cleaning the glass. There will be constant water movement and vibration. Tick tick tick.

Not worth it.

I have 3 of these racks in my garage. Not sturdy at all. The shelves are flimsy and will eventually sag under no weight. You'll need plywood as stated above.

IMO...The longer its up, the more complacent we tend get. You'll have ZERO room for errors.. Just Google "Aquarium stand 2x4 build". Cheaper and safer.

I think wood is always better. 2x4’s are strong and cheap and require little skill to make a frame.

There are a lot of people using rack systems longterm w/o issues and it’s big in the FW world.

I was under the impression when I joined MARSH that this would be a forum for “best practices.” This thread is pretty far from that. Just because you can and somebody else somewhere did it, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

Let’s dial it back a bit please. The forum has the ability for each user to ignore posts by another user if needed.

I’m gonna be the bigger person here. My apologies if I offended you.

Just trying to give the OP my opinions since I’ve used them before and have seen many others use them without issues.

@gm357 is right. It is not the best choice.

If you wanna know my personal choice for a stand it would be Framing Tech and yes definitely get it stress tested and know potential weak spots and pressure points. Aluminum 80/20 is very light and super strong.

“ All of our designs go through a structural analysis process to make sure that they will stay standing for years to come. If you need any assistance with your design, please reach out to us.”

These stands are typically more expensive than just a good ol’ 2x4 stand and if you want to save money I’d go the 2x4 route.

Metal stands are cheaper, but heavy.

I would like to apologize I didn't know this was gonna go like this. I did end up building one out of wood. I have ran into a little problem I tried to fit my 20gal long tank in the bottom it's to wide I made the stand to fit the 40 breeder. The space between the 2x4's is 12 1/4" wide the tank is 12 1/2". What's the best way to fix the problem. The stand is not fully finished. I want to thank everyone for the info. IMG_9824.JPG

Well the good news is that you didn’t use bondo or wood filler yet. Just unscrew it. Maybe rebuild to your exact dimensions.

This is the easiest diy stand on the net. Been using it for a long time.

Well the top is exact dimension for the 40 breeder. I went ahead and notched out the 2x4’s some so the 20L gallon will fit. I will add the other 2x4’s and siding. D81B26F4-6F6B-41D9-8963-14D45350DB7E.jpeg

it will be fine.

I can post pics if anyone is interested in seeing a scary wood frame holding two tanks vertically.

Definetly want to add the purple boards. Right now the screws are taking all the weight... not the structure..

Yeah there is no way I would trust that to hold an aquarium full of live rock sand and water. Thats in accident waiting to happen.
