Yesterday I recieved an order from LFS. I was suppose to get one of those super color crocea clams. Instead, I got three xenia polyps. LFS will send out the clam next week, but now I have a problem. I have done zero research on this type of coral. Last night I believe it was attacked by something in my 75 main tank. It may be acclimation. What ever the problem, I moved it to my daughter 10 gallon tank where there are no potential preditors. If I can keep it alive, that is where it will stay. What I can I do to keep these guys alive. For the record, I am not scaming LFS :)

Sorry toefu, I don't quite understand your comment.
I am not sure if it was eaten on by a my stawberry crab, peppermint shrimp, or if it is aclimating badly. I need help, not silly responses

Xenia is really hit or miss, some tanks you cant get rid of it, others it just wont survive in (when all parameters seem the same). It also doesnt ship well at all. I would guess that its just an acclimating/shipping problem.

Agree with Shane... that seems to be the general consensus. Personally, I received a pulsing frag and just threw it (without any sort of acclimation), figuring if it didnt make it "oh well, im not out of anything." Well the darn thing made it alright... a day later it opened up more and has since begun to sprout multiple branches. People say it can grow in your tank like weeds... I believe it. Alot of folks also say that iodine levels are important to xenia. I never watch my iodide levels and dont use supplements, just rely on my salt mix for that stuff (Oceanic)... you might wanna make sure its in good moderate flow. I have mine between two powerheads on a wavemaker and it loves the flow in its area (which isnt direct, but still somewhat strong).

I did not even think about Iodine. I will add a minimal amount to see if there is a change. I have never seen a coral decline so quickly. I had an elegance coral that took a month to buy the farm. But, I found out that the collection techniques being used are unsound. I would like a small one for my daughters nano if she decides on a clown. I really think a 10gal is too small for an anemone. What are other good hosts for clowns besides elegance, and frog spawn? :?

10 gal is probally too small for an anemone long term, but what kind of clown is it?

Also be careful with dosing with iodine without testing, Iodine at high levels is toxic.

I have not got one yet for my daughter. If my Rose BTA splits, I will give her the offspring.
Not sure on the type of clown yet.

It seem the idodine dosing is working. The xenia seem to have stabilized over the day. We wil know more when the lights kick on this evening. My daughter wants the tank lit at night by the way. :D

Green hairy mushrooms might be an option for the clown to host in. Fireeater has clowns breeding in his. I know someone else has clowns hosting in their GHM too.

you may want to look into getting some iodide instead of iodine. iodide is a more broken down version and is easier for your corals to use. it is also far less toxic.

I have a clown that uses green mushrooms for cover as well!

As far as the Xenia you called it polyps. The are really stalking and not polypy. If you truly have polyps it's probably not xenia. I tried iodine. It's very potent, I almost crashed my tank. I stopped using it! Be careful.

I have to echo Markie concerning possible overdosing - youve definitely gotta use caution with iodine supplements. Like I said, I dont dose anything personally... just let my salt mix handle trace elements. Hope it works out for you!!
