The more I look at them I believe they are chubs too and their patterns will probably change as they grow and I’ll find out for sure

Here’s another pic. It looks more like the one at the top that’s yellowish. 9331e93c1a3bbef7153c883773afc491.jpg

I’ve caught a few of these in my cast net (mostly in the marsh), but they’re not common in the Galveston surf . Surfside tends to have better water clarity and I see more species there. I’m not sure what they are. Did you catch it in the marsh or off the beach. It wouldn’t be impossible for them to be in the surf because the marshes are so close and feed into the beach, but I think these guys are more of a brackish water species.

I caught them on the beach in between the rocks on the jetty. They were very close to shore when I caught them.

Howdy everyone. I found this thread several months ago. Read through is as I could. I'm headed to Galveston on Saturday, July 10th. High tide at the Pleasure Pier is predicted for 6:06am with the low predicted for 10:08pm. I'll be there with my family and my sister-in-laws family. I wish I could plan something specific (I cannot guarantee I'll actually get to do any collecting). I think I'll be out there around 10-10:30pm. I suppose I'll try across from Academy. Not looking for much. Half dozen peppermints, a bleeny or two, and maybe a couple of nems. IDK, whatever I can find in 20 mins or so. Bucket, dip net, and bright lights. Wish me luck.

You’ll be able to find Blenny’s and anemones for sure. Peps are hit and miss. Clear water, Flat surf, and Light winds really make all the difference. If you go on the wrong day it really sucks especially if you’ve never done it before. You’ll get caught off guard with the rough surf, wind, and cloudy water. Makes it really difficult unless you’ve got in there before and kinda know the area.

The best time is when the wind is offshore N, NW, WNW, and the water is somewhat clear. Or if the wind is near slack which happens quite often during July, aug, sept. When it gets clear in the hottest summer months you find a bunch of weird stuff that isn’t typically there. Sargent Majors come in, different Blenny’s, peps get thick, seaweed sometimes has some interesting stuff like pipe fish, starfish, etc.

I used to live at the beach when I was a kid. Lived at a few piers in high island for a while. We kept our surf boards in a small room on the pier. Lived at a cabin or two. My mom used to work in Bolivar. One day the water was so clear that it literally looked like Cancun Mexico. It was more clear than Destin, Florida on most days I’ve surfed down there. I remember standing on the end of the pier and you could see the bottom. It was impressive for this area and I’ve never seen it that way since. Although I have seen very clear days like Florida. They happen like 2 or 3x a year. When it happens and you’re down there, you can’t believe you’re actually in Texas. Feels like you’re on vacation. I frequently check the cams looking for those days in the summer months starting about right now. I love the beach. Even when it’s not “crazy clear” there are still plenty of days where you can see your feet in 4’ of water. :) 1A9EB31A-51B2-4EDF-A036-341B6EC52531.jpeg D87108A9-0DBD-406D-A3C8-85EFDEAF4A7B.jpeg DA8555A5-27DC-452E-A155-ACCFC2414203.jpeg 5D4E75D2-A396-40CE-9B32-5D412182A78B.jpeg 6BB5010B-C02E-4E12-8CB9-E05605FAC0E8.jpeg 5930211E-7293-4E3B-98C4-9A65736714BE.jpeg C6C2064C-1977-4973-8385-225744A788B6.jpeg CC6E38C6-E28B-49B1-8A00-38AA2B080952.jpeg 55F1705D-FDCF-4BC5-AD41-86DF1249A5F9.jpeg BF622B2F-8EE0-4C18-8DA4-F3024BA307D4.jpeg

The 4th and 5th had good conditions, I didnt really try but did catch a few baby jacks in the surf just north of San Luis.

Easiest for me is to check the NOAA Forcast - Gulf of Mexico Marine Text Forecasts by Zone and scroll down to the Galveston Bay and Costal waters from high island to freeport. Anything over 10-15 kt winds or 2ft seas is a wash.

Rest of this week would be a no go

I made it to Galveston on Saturday and did find the time to give collecting a try. I was forewarned that conditions would not be good, but with 4-5 hours of my day used driving (round trip) I had to give it a try. I managed to collect 6 blennies, ranging from about an 1" to about 2 1/2". Also caught a Periwinkle snail.

Only put the mollie miller’s in the tank. The others will eat your corals. They are the light brown guys with shorter antennas. You can train them on mysis and they will become like a dog in 8 weeks.
Thanks. Don't have any corals yet. Tell you what though, these guys are a hoot when I feed. Sinking pellets...they gobble 'em up like Pac-Man.
