We had a tank issue about six months ago and a startup LFS was watching our big Emperor and a Vlamingi Tang for us while they were supposed to be having a tank made. I went to get my fish back yesterday from them, and the Emperor they gave me was not mine. The one I had was huge (8+) inches and very hardy as I had purchased it from a local person's personal stock where he had lived for many years. The LFS fessed up that the fish died and they ordered a replacement. They failed to mention that he died or that anything was wrong and put on a front that he was just fine all this time. I had been asking for videos of the fish and they kept putting it off so I had my doubts anyways If that fish died in their care, then they have no business taking care of any fish because he was healthy as a horse. I understand that stuff happens, however, to be given a replacement one and be lied about it is where I draw the line.

Long story short, I am just wondering if anyone has seen a very large, show size Emperor for sale in the local area on any forums, CL, etc., in the past 6ish months as I have a feeling they probably sold it. Thanks for your help.

Darn... I'm mad and I aint' even dealt with the people but suspect where my problem came from too. Sounds like someone wanting to start a business without knowledge or business ethics. Oh well hopefully they turn around and become successful but doing things like this once, twice, three times and who knows how many more is not likely to succeed.

Does the name start with an F and end with a D? If it does then my doubts all these year were not misplaced. If it's not I still have my doubts :)

We are really upset. That emperor was my husband's favorite fish. It was hardy as hell, too. And to pull a stunt like that, where you lie and try to replace it and hope we don't notice, is just absurd. I don't know if I am more mad if he actually died or if they sold him. If they did sell him, I would definitely be interested in trying to buy him back. At the very least, I would just want to know he is in good shape. The vlamingii tang we got back appears to be the same one we gave them, but he isn't in the best shape either. I have seen worse, for sure, but it still isn't good. He has some nicks on his sides, his dorsal fin has some chunks/bent spikes (I have no idea how to describe it), and the little streamers that came of his tail fin are gone and they were very long and pretty before. Also, his color is lacking, which I am sure we can fix over time with better diet. I didn't have the highest expectations that they would be super awesome when I picked them up, but I at least expected they would be my fish and not a replacement in hopes that I wouldn't notice.

No, although nothing we have gotten from their has lived either. The LFS I am referring to starts with an A and has the number 2 in the name.

I was avoiding putting the name in the thread so that it wouldn't be searchable. I told them that I wanted to put our story all over the interwebs because this is BS and he requested that I don't. This is only part of our dealings with them and I only posted because I want to know if someone purchased/thinks they purchased our fish or if anyone has seen it advertised for sale because there is something not right about it having just died.

If you read this thread... http://www.marsh-reef.org/threads/41896-A-word-of-caution Then that could answer a lot of questions for you. Seems like they didn't have the ability to provide correct water in their own store.

I did see that thread and contacted the person who wrote it. Unfortunately, seems like negative reviews are coming out of the woodwork recently but weren't around 6 months ago when this all began.

I had no idea we could have become so attached to a fish, but we did. He grunted loudly randomly and was comical to watch because he had no idea how big he really was. I will say that the one the LFS gave us as a replacement [again, we didn't know we needed a replacement because no one told us that ours was gone/dead/whatever happened to him] is fully changed and fairly large, however, he doesn't seem tank adjusted and has not wanted to eat so far. For the sake of all parties involved, this one better live. The LFS also agreed to replace this one should it not make it, which I am just adding that to provide all the details. Doesn't make the lying about my fish any better or more justified, and I am still beyond upset about this entire ordeal.

Just out of curiosity, why did you let them hold your fish in the first place? Wouldn't you be more worried about them getting mixed with new arrivals and possibly getting some sort of pathogen? Although it isn't easy to find a place to baby sit an 8" fish either. Tough call there. I would be upset too. I care for my fish as much as I care for all my other animals.
