So as I was floating around in my friends above the ground pool a thought hit. What about turning one of these bad boys into a saltwater aquarium. What do you think the water temp would get up to during the summer? Do you think this would work. Might be an interesting idea, would be cool for coral growout if the temp could be kept reasonable. Just thinking outside of the box.

Our pool gets into the high 80s and it is an in ground. The cost to maintain temps would be quite expensive for a home owner.

my 170 gallons of aquaponics which is in complete shade hits 82f constantly lately. If the sun were to hit it, i don't doubt that you'll see constant 88f.

not to mention the pH swings during the rains. my aquaponics setup runs at 6.5 ph for the most part (which is a good thing), but after a large shower, i'll see it swing down to 5.9 on my reefkeeper.

and the winter is actually quite a problem as well. This same shaded setup is in a constant war with coldness. even with 2 300w heaters cranking in january, my water temps drop to 55f. I'll note that my tank is not insulated, but i think i'll probably shoot for some colder weather fish this winter.

I've actually looked at it quite a bit...

It would be no different (relatively little) than what is being done in Florida. If you look at those, they use green houses with clear polycarbonate tops to cover the tanks/pools to let light in and keep rain out, they thermally regulate with venting in the tops/sides and in a lot of cases use geothermal cooling/heating.

Its doable but I would only consider it if your getting into a wholesale setup.

Maybe it was the fruity flavored cocktails and the summer heat... kidding Jason...

It can be done and you should give it a whirl. Pet some large glass pains to help heat it up during the winter months and maybe put the pool partially inground to keep it cooler in the summer. Insulate the pool exterior with insulation. Even if the pool can not be used year round I would have a large tank inside for when it is just a loosing battle with extreme Texas heat or cold air blowing in from Michigan lol. Tell your kids not to piss in it lol. Jim

I've always dreamed of this. When we went to cancun, they had hugeeeeeeeee Rubbermaids plumbed all together at the sea turtle farm, and they had sharks and triggers in them! So it can be done, but it might burn a hole though your wallet.

Lol. Yeah cats and raccoons stealing expensive fish would be an issue. Granted I do have a formal dining room not being used that could fit the 12' round by 3' deep lol. But then again same issue with cats

Great pic. It really would be a concern too. My father has a koi pond and lost some of his nicest ones to a dang heron not long back.
