Well, we spent $70 restoring the stand for our tank and today we started on the tank itself. Well, the overflow was filled with bio balls and today when we took them out we discovered a crack in the bottom slab. $150 down the drain along with the cost of the stand.

Does anyone know if it would even be cost effective to have a glass tank built to the same dimensions as this one was or would it just be so expensive we might as well get one in the existing sizes? The old tanks was 78x21x24.

Needless to say I'm bummed and it's hard to go back to thoughts of a 55g or 75g after you've had visions of 170g :(

How bad is the crack? can you use some aquarium sealer to seal it.. It's may be ok if the crack is minor and in the overflow box since there not much weight/ pressure on the overflow bottom (no sand bed, no rocks, lower water height...)

Unfortunately the crack goes all the way through from the drilled hole to the edge of the tank.

Unfortunately, sounds to me like your asking for trouble if you try to repair it. I'd chalk it up to experience and start over. That sucks. :-x

You might get a quote from someone to replace just the bottom panel. It may or may not be worth it, but at least you would know.

Good idea Shane. One place to start is one of our sponsors, Keith Gay at Aquatic Designs, ph: 713-467-9737. I don't know if he'd do it, but he installs customs for a living, besides tooling with us. Give him a call, if he can't do it or quote it, he'll steer you to someone who will. Good luck.

Thanks! I sent off a quote request for wet/dry. I love the looks of acrylic, but not the cost or the issue with kids and critters scratching it. Whatever we do it will mean saving pennies, but at least we'll know what our options are.

What about just replacing the bottom slab with acrylic? Is that even possible?

I don't think you could ever get a good enough bond between glass and acrylic to do that. Not in my house at least.
