It’s not just Hong Kong. I lived in Seoul, Korea and it was very common for people to wear masks while out and about. I imagine other eastern Asian cultures do this as well. When you’re living in a city the size of Seoul that is so densely populated and you’re in close proximity at all times, it makes sense. Plus, the yellow dust periodically coming from China clouds the sky and no one wants to breath that.
True dat. When I was in the Philippines in 1994 people were wearing masks in the cities. The pollution was nasty in the dense cities, but in the rural areas the air was nice with some of the clearest night skies I've ever seen.

Don't forget Japan, been customary for at least a decade there to wear a mask if you think you might be sick. They put more importance on society than the individual so doing things that will negatively impact others is frowned upon.

Meanwhile, in the states a lot of people take freedom as meaning they can do anything they want, and anyone that gets in the way is attacking the country and should be killed. I know, I have been on the receiving end of attempted murder over a perceived limiting of a persons freedom to do as they please. That was an interesting Christmas. First time I have ever coughed up blood. Have not been on good terms with my uncle since then.
