You need to have a skimmer running if for nothing else, to rule it out. Not to mention a skimmer does a great job of oxygenating the water.

I can tell you that when I notice my skimmer getting a little dirty and not producing as much skimmate as it normally does, it coincides with my PO4 shooting up.

If you have low PO4, one thing you can do is take your skimmer off line. So if you have high PO4, the opposite should be true. Even skimming a little wet would be preferable until PO4 comes down some. The drawback to skimming wet is that you have to empty the cup more often.

+1 on the skimmer. i know some people don't run them but when you see the gunk that gets pulled out of the water that would otherwise remain...
I actually have a Space Saver Skimmer that should fit in my sump. I have stand alone pumps for both the Algae Scrubber and the UV filter so I may have to move some pumps around to get all to fit. When I switched back from fish only to coral I never brought the new skimmer online. My old skimmer was oversized and I was constantly having to adjust it. It was super frustrating. I've also been continually surprised by how much gunk the sock filter picks up such that I wasn't in a hurry to get the skimmer installed. Plus my corals had been doing great up until now. My overflow is an old school Durso so not really worried about oxygenation too much. A lot of aeration occurs getting from the DT to the filter sock box. I'll get the skimmer installed this weekend. I am skeptical that it will solve all of the problems though but one step at a time, right? It definitely couldn't hurt. Thanks y'all for the urging to install the skimmer! We'll see what happens.
