its macro algae you grow in your sump. as it grows it uses nitrate. it does not attach to anything like other macro algae does. other macro algae can be thrown in the main tank by a return pump and a start of it can grow anywhere in your tank and take over if your fish dont like marine algae lol. its also a safe haven for organisms that clean your water like pods, bristle worms, and snails.
