I turn off all pumps and let the sump fill. I use a magic eraser to clean the inside walls and chambers. Remove filter pads, socks. Shake out my media bags (i don't rinse them, just shake out any detrius). I remove my skimmer and rtn pump and clean those at this time as well. Then i let it sit abt 45mins so the detrius settles on the bottom and break out my trusty wet/dry vac and vacuum up the detrius. My goal isn't so much in removing the water, its removing the detrius. Once this is done, equipment goes back in, new filter pads & socks, add my new water in and I'm good to go. I do this about once a quarter, but will do it additionally if it is needed.

Hey it's taken my 6 months to grow those apple sponges in my sump! No way I am taking them out now! :) Yeah there is some "dust" in the bottom of the sump and I will eventually get around to pulling it out.
