Coming from old school Tank to new Tank

Hi all:

We have relocated from The Netherlands to Pasadena , Texas...and for many years we have had our 'old school' fishtank .

My Wife has expressed interest in having an invertebrate tank this time.

This is what we used to have (old youtube film)

Old those fish grew up in this tank that we had for 10 years from new to

I went to JCB on their 11 year anniversary and am quite blown away at how far development has gone...

We want to probably go with a 650 3 view Red tank...be it new or maybe used ...depending on what makes more sense...I was lucky to find someone who took my entire tank over when we came to Texas...so if anyone is in same boat we are willing to do that as well.

But while I was about to make the purchase...I realized how far out of synch on information I was that I did not go on with it just yet.

I'd like to inform myself of the new techniques again..

As stated I am like old school wet/dry , ozone, skimmer, set up with a covered top kind of guy...and most of the stuff I saw there was totally different.

I do not want to kill off any of my livestock unless i am at a good place knowledge wise.

Any recommendations for literature I should follow, read up on ...and also maybe something light as my son who is now 12 wants to take care of the tank..

Thank you all for your reactions and advise

Regards
Glenn van Kooijk

Welcome to the United States, Houston, and to MARSH!

Until about 3 years ago I also had an old-school tank with hang-on-back wet-dry filter and air-powered skimmer. You can still enjoy a tank like that, but the newer technology makes it a lot easier to succeed with corals. I still have a glass top on one of my tanks, but it does make the temperature a little higher than ideal.

I'm not sure what the latest good books are, but this club and the local fish stores such as FJW are great sources of information.

So, as I am starting to dabble...in my peripherals...and the Mrs wants to run things...what would be best combo of peripheral hardware i should go with?
Thinking about :
Lights - Radeon? (with an integrated controller?)
Wavemaker and Pump (integrated?)
Lunar Lighting? (People seriously underestimate the value of the moon on reefs)
I am assuming going with an APEX system

Glenn:

Welcome. I sent you a private message regarding your other question.
Hi man, sorry for not replying earlier...I went with the 650 as the 750 XL did not fit in the place we want it...
Having said that ...I still feel totally lost...coming from my old school tank to all these new systems ! :)

Lights: Multiple options. AIs, Kessel, Radeons or cheap Chinese ones.
Wavemaker: Jebao if you want cheap, Tunze, IceCap or EcoTech Marine MP40s.
Pump: With your 650, internal. M2 or you can go with a cheaper option.
Lunar Effect: Most LEDs have that feature so just make sure whichever you choose has the feature.
Apex: Check the part-out thread. Someone is selling one.
