So I have been looking around to start adding a few fish to my tank and saw options for quarantined fish or conditioned fish. We know what quarantined is but Google searches for conditioned fish link to behavior modification. Obviously not what im looking for. Is it just fish kept in medicated environment but for shorter times?

Typically conditioned fish means they were likely wild caught and while have had been treated with Formalin, Prazi and/or Metro, they have not been through a full QT. Usually are shipped out within 1-2 days of treatment and may still be carriers of some types of parasites. It's strongly advised to properly QT conditioned fish for at least 7-14 days for observation once you receive them to ensure they are parasite free.

here's a break down of dr reef's processes

Procedure For Quarantined Fish

  • After receiving fish, they are visually checked by Dr.Reef for any visible issues. Temperature is matched by floating the bags for 30 min.
Most wholesalers send us fish at Salinity 1.018 and temp of 80F, so we keep our QT tanks at Salinity 1.018 and temp at 80F. Over time we will bring the salinity upto 1.021-1.023 range.

  • Please expect Salinity of 1.023-1.024 for fish. (reduces stress and suppresses ammonia during shipping)

  • Fish go straight into quarantine tanks with either Chloroquine Phosphate or Copper power.

  • Starting doses are: CP at 20 mg/gal and Copper at 1ppm

  • After 24 hrs, we increase the doses to their final levels, CP at 40 mg/gal or Copper at 1.75-2.00 ppm

  • Fish stay in these levels for 2 weeks.

  • After 14 days we move them to observation tanks.

  • In observation, We administer Prazipro and Metro to get rid of internal parasites. We repeat treatment every 3 to 5 days.

  • Meanwhile we feed Fish Bendazole along with Metronidazole, mixed in food to rid Uronema and internal parasites.

  • At 4-6 weeks fish are ready to ship. If customers likes us to keep them in observation little longer, we can, please let us know.

  • Feeding: We feed 2 times a day. All fish are fed a 50/50 mixture of frozen Mysis & frozen brine. In some cases frozen blood worms

    Procedure For Conditioned Fish

    • Fish go straight into Formalin bath for 1 hour.

    • After 1 hour we move them to sterile tanks.

    • In sterile tanks, We administer Prazipro and Metronidazole to get rid of internal parasites. Doses are normally double the recommendations.

    • After 24 hours of being treated fish are ready to ship. We like to observe them in sterile tanks at least for 1 week. After 1 week in sterile tanks, if they dont sell, we move them to copper tanks and get them fully quarantined.

I did a write up. Not sure how his process works....maybe he buys from wholesaler after order, with extra fish just in case.... QT's or at the very least "holds" the fish for XX time. given the time it took to receive (+30 days), i dont think there's that much of a differentiator between the two from this particular vendor. Maybe marketing semantics. You will wait and the fish will be in his holding system medicated. Given its been a few weeks since i added all of the fish to the DT from dr. reefs, all specimens are healthy, alive and feeding. The mystery turned out to be a real fatty bruiser, putting the other wrasses in their place immediately. Moorish idol has settled in and figured out the auto feeder. Anthias are chasing flake food.

Other sites, you order, the fish is at your doorstep two days later.

I have a new set of fish in QT now, not ordered from dr. reef.....Saltwaterfish.com had a rhomboid special for 75. could not resist but now i have 50 bux in meds in my amazon cart, confused AF on the order of treatment.

Wow impressive process. How much extra that adds to the cost of the fish just curious.

Somebody slap me in the back of the head the next time i think about placing an order with them. ALL the fish ordered from dr. reefs eating and doing well. lesson learned.

I think I am going to give @Seaworthy Aquatics a shot. They are local and have qt’ed stock.
Thanks for the mention and hopefully we can figure out a time that works for us to get together. Time seems to be my biggest issue lol. That and space, but I'm getting there.

This is almost my exact process, though I don't quite agree with some of the numbers. First I don't feel 1.75 ppm copper is enough anymore. It used to be, but some parasites, namely Ich, have become more resistant to copper over time so I don't trust 1.75 anymore. 2 is a bare minimum imo, but I aim closer to 2.25, depending on the fish. I also keep the fish at this level for a full 30 days. 14 days at 80F can be acceptable, but it won't always rid the fish of everything so I prefer to stick with the full 30. Everything else is the same and I have the fish for about 7 weeks. I also try to make sure all fish accept dried/pellet food as well as frozen and everyone gets feed 2-3 times a day.

Was looking at ordering from them. How many fish have you ordered by chance? Was it several orders or a bunch of fish in one order?
