This is the formula that I’ve currently been using that HotRocks figured up. I like it a lot and observed it’s very close. You need to account for the volume of any HOB filter among other things.

Note: Aviod using any ammonia reducers such as Prime or Amquel while dosing Copper. Ammonia reducers + Copper can create toxic levels.

Note:
You’ll need to run the therapeutic range for the brand of copper you’re using. Not all brands have the same therapeutic range.
It’s also safer to ramp up the Copper level over 5-7 days unless you have a Velvet outbreak. Then you would try to reach therapeutic within 48 hrs.

(Chelated) Copper Power: 1.5 - 2.0 ppm
(Chelated) CopperSafe: 1.5 - 2.0 ppm
(Ionic) Cupramine 0.4 - 0.5 ppm

Dosing formula:
**Total gallons x 1.475ml = Total ml to reach 2.5ppm

**Now Take 2.5ppm / Total ml = PPM per ML Dosed

**Now take desired target / PPM per ML Dosed = Total ml needed to reach desired target

Examples for (Chelated) Copper Power:

5 gallon tank
5gal x 1.475ml = 7.37ml
2.5ppm / 7.37ml = 0.33ppm per ml dosed
1.75ppm / 0.33ppm = (5.30ml total dose)

10 gallon tank
10gal x 1.475ml = 14.75ml
2.5ppm / 14.75ml = 0.16ppm per ml dosed
1.75ppm / 0.16ppm = (10.93ml total dose)

15 gallon tank
15gal x 1.475ml = 22.12ml
2.5ppm / 22.12ml = 0.11ppm per ml dosed
1.75ppm / 0.11ppm = (15.90ml total dose)

20 gallon tank
20gal x 1.475ml = 29.5ml
2.5ppm / 29.5ml = 0.08ppm per ml dosed
1.75ppm / 0.08ppm = (21.87ml total dose)

This is a little less accurate than above (Just trying to keep from going out 10 decimal points), but will get you darn close.

1.48ml per gallon = 2.5ppm
1.33ml per gallon = 2.25ppm
1.18ml per gallon = 2.0ppm
1.04ml per gallon = 1.75ppm
.89ml per gallon = 1.5ppm

I’ve always used Coppersafe and have had good experience with it but had to get the Hanna copper checker after their batches showed inconsistencies.

What and where can copper powder be bought? I’d like to give it a try.

Thanks,
Josh

Copper Power can usually be purchased from same stores as Copper Safe.

Lol. Thanks it’s all starting to make sense now.

I’ve never seen that at the stores I’ve been to or I haven’t looked close enough.

We’re all using Copper Power now with the Hanna Copper checker. Copper Power has a 5-7 year shelf life! Very consistent too.

CopperSafe had inaccuracies and false information from the manufacturer. To be frank...I don’t trust them anymore. Most of us have switched.

You can get it anywhere. :)
