what happens with the minerals that scatter when I scrape coralline algae off my glass? I expect they are not soluble in any real amount in an aquarium environment, and just become particulate in the sand or get filtered out by a sock, depending on your setup. But perhaps the magnesium component makes them more soluble than I think, and some decent percentage of the mass rejoins the water column as available minerals.
I'm just guessing - a quick search of a few forums didn't yield a clear answer - I wonder if anyone knows?

I would assume it would just sit about till removed. It is basically the same as coral skeleton, and that is what most rock and sand is. As long as your ph is not so low it is melting your sand....
