Hey reefers,
I recently noticed that my metal halide is melting a crossbar on my tank. I have a t5/MH fixture with a small reflector centered over the tank. My question is, should I worry about the safety of my tank with this happening? Should I remove the crossbar from the tank?
Thanks,
Mat

Thanks. Right now they are pretty low so I will move it up a good 6 inches. I hope that wont affect the light intensity for my acros too much.

How high were they when they were melting the brace?

about 6 inches. I am going to experiment with changing the height tommorow.

Geez. I don't even keep my leds that close to the water. I keep mine around 8-12" off of the water.

Yea, I had my t5s that close and noticed my reeftopia yellow acro with charuatuse tips was starting to burn tips, so I moved up my t5s up to almost 2 feet above the water surface, and go from there.

The cross bar is needed, it keeps the middle of tank from bowling out. Which if remove could cause tank to fail. Manufacturers do this so they do not have to use thicker glass.

Yeah definitely move the light fixtures up and your acros will be fine. At a minimum raise them to 12”- my mh pendants are about 14” above the water line. Some people go up to 18-20”.

If you got single mh fixtures like I do try not to put one right above the plastic center brace.

You could always add a small clip on surface fan to dissipate that heat and still keep your lights intensity.
