Ok thanks for the info. I will look for a very large food grade container .. maybe an ocean salt plastic container. I will use filter media. You can never be too careful.

Many are NSF and the ones I use are... It's easy to look for the symbols on the bottom of the can and beats paying hundreds for a 5 gallon container.
I’ve never seen a regular trash can that’s NSF. Where do you shop at?

Can you post a pic of yours so I’ll know what to look for.

You guys use PVC plumbing for your sumps. It is a form of plastic .. is it aquarium safe? Just curious.

Yes Polyvinyl chloride or PVC is reef safe. It doesn't break down in saltwater like a lot of plastics do. Flexible PVC is not reef safe though, as it contains plasticizers that will break down in saltwater.

They sell them on Amazon but they are pricy for plastic bins.
Yeah amazon is a bit of a rip off for that kind of stuff for whatever reason. The Rubbermaid Brute line is all reef safe and comes in a bunch of sizes, 10g to 300g anyway, and you can usually get them at places like home depot and lowes. I use 20g Brute totes for my top off containers, only 15-20 each if I recall.

Ya thing is the black garbage/trash/rubbish bin looks ugly enough. Having a clear to clearish container in the aquarium while looking at filter media inside it is disgusting. I do need more filtration to get my nitrates down so. I think I will get a food grade bin and have it above the aquarium water level. I have no idea where to get the proper pvc aquarium grade hosing. I will attempt to bring it from a flow discharge reduced hang on the back filter to the bin full of filter media. Then another hose from the opposite side to the aquarium. I plan on using a drinking water safe garden hose.

I found one today in a store. Rubber made for cereal. But it does not say no BPH. You think it would??? 5.2 liters tall and slim.. It will be placed just outside the aquarium to increase filtration capacity. I will use sponges as filter media.

I’m using a 20 gallon Brute to store RO water and 7 gallon Fermonster beer fermenters for mixing and top up. They have big lids and are easy to clean. Plus they hold a decent volume and cost is about 40 bucks for a 7 gallon. Pretty much any brewing store carries them and they are food safe (obviously).

Ya I saw a sterilight product at wallmart. It was much bigger than I would like. I have no sump so probably a good idea for me to get. I did not get it cus it is intended for storage of yarn not food. And a bit bigger than I would like so I do not know.
