I turned off my skimmer for a couple of days to see if my fuge could handle the bio load. It couldn't and I have cyano on the sand bed. Popular wisdon is reduce feeding and lights. I already have plenty of flow. What about Chemi-Clean? I had no problem with cyano until I turned off the skimmer. So my assumption is that if I use chemi-clean it will be gone for good. Suggestions... Anyone want to sell me the rest of a bottle?

Read some more...I don't trust chemicals. I think I am going to get a Fighting Conch and ride it out with less feedings. However I can't stand the way it looks so I'll have my hand in the tank until it goes away. Thanks for all the help.

I used chemi clean recently. It worked great. I highly doubt it'll harm anything. My octopus wasn't affected at all, and they're one of the most delicate critters out there when it comes to chemicals.

simple advice

Tom,

My advice is simple, tough it out. Leave your skimmer on until your fuge gets properly "cycled", (not sure if that's the proper term, but I think you get my drift). Do a water change, or a few. Get a conch, a queen does an adequate job, if you can't find that fighter. Physically remove as much of the cyano as you can. It will go away. I know that you hate anything unsightly in your tank, (you are a self-described "anal" :D remember? Hang tough, don't go with chemicals that you really don't want to use.

Good luck.

I did a big sand bed cleaning today before when I just stired it around it would be back in an hour. I am running half the lights for a couple of days. It looks good 6 hrs after the clean up. Anal when it comes to a clean tank. I can't sit and watch TV with my tank next to me dirty. Also evers since I was a kid I have had a fear of dirty water. I don't know where it came from. Algae and other tank nasties are like dirt you don't live in a filthy house why should my fish. My tank will probally be quite dirty when I get married and have kids but for now it has to stay clean to impress the ladies.

The Chemi-clean works great, you don't have to use much (just the tinyest scoop) and it works overnight.

The amount of chemicals it may add to your tank is negligible. I'd do it in a heartbeat if my 150 got it again.

When I had it the first time, I did lots of water changes, scrubbed rocks and then watched it take over my tank in just two weeks. I finally broke down and bought the Chemi-clean and it nailed it in hours.

Amazing stuff, that powder!
