How many cubes of food do you think can be held in those tubes that aren't being chilled? How many days do you think it will take for that stuff to rot?

The correct way to do this is to have a closed loop of water running through the fridge that the dosers (inside the fridge as well) are tapped into. As the chilled food is pushed into that closed lupe via a peristaltic pump, it will rush the food to the display. Otherwise its gonna rot in a hot second unless youre using such a short length of tubing that its no longer practical.

The way I am going to try is reverse the motor for a period of time to have air bubble stir the chilled food inside the cooler. Then forward the motor to dose food, then reverse again to purge food out of the feeding tube. This is just an idea, like you said food might rot in tube. Shorting the feeding tube will help but still need flush from time to time.
Don't have room for a mini fridge. I saw someone using a wine chiller, but not sure how long it can keep food from rotting.

That's the problem that Sharath ran into. He was looking for a cooler that would basically chill a six pack of beer, which aren't easy to come by at a reasonable price. Even if the frozen food is thawed and kept 100% in refrigeration, it still only has a few good days on it max.

Keep in mind, the raw ingredients that they use are caught in the wild, not always frozen along then way, purchased from another company, frozen, thawed, blended, frozen again, then they arrive to your door. They probably thaw out on the ride home or delivery to your house as well. The frozen food is near its last leg by the time you thaw it and serve it to your fish. I don't think you'll find a frozen food manufacturer that would recommend feeding their food past three days from the point of thawing.

There in comes the companies that make the suspended, chilled food that has a longer shelf life. Reef Nutrition being the one that comes to mind, but you pay maybe $20-30 per small bottle.

Looking forward to seeing the results. Perhaps you can keep the refrigerator at a lower temperature and ask a friend to thaw out new cubes into the reservoir every 3 days or so. Food grade fish eggs from the supermarket have been good in water for 3-4 days for me if I keep them at a low enough temperature. Anyway, good luck!

Definitely not leave it and forget it solution. I have a 14days overseas vacation coming up in September. Still need a neighbor' kid or fish buddy come and check every 3 days. $30 last for 2 weeks seems worth it for me.

you might look at dosing this.. I keep mine refrigerated but supposedly that is not required. so maybe you wont have the fouling in the line problem so much..

That brand looks interesting. The brand I was referring to is Reef Nutrition. Most local sponsors carry it on hand. Like I said, it's not as cheap, but if it's just for a short period of time, I think it's feasible. Couple that with some flakes from an automatic feeder and you should be solid.

The only thing that would worry me is making such big adjustments right before you go out of town. I typically don't like to make any changes within the last two or three weeks of me being home, unless it's absolutely necessary.

Having said that, if you use the hose running through the fridge idea, buy plenty of extra tubing, roll up as much as can fit in the fridge, and use a relatively slow flow rate. You've just made a small tank chiller.

I wouldn't recommend using the water hose that he does, as I have heard it might potentially effect your corals long term. The vinyl tubing is much more expensive, but shop around online. You can find it at reasonable prices. Also, your tank is large so it may only effect your tank for a couple degrees, but since you're running the fridge anyway, it's just an extra bonus.

Any updates on this???

I was on vacation and had only apex fish feeder (feeding pellets); Amazingly my female anthias survived without frozen food for more than 10 days.

I built mine using a mini fridge, a brs doser, a stirrer, and some solenoids. I use frozen food in a beaker. Has worked well, although I don’t use it all the time. Happy to share more if anyone is interested.
