Here is how I do the fuge for my NC28

But before that here is the final product.

I had to use the larger of the two inner loop constant water height columns. The one that is nominally used for the stock JBJ skimmer - the other is my heater column. The very outside ones are of course the return pump ones that are variable level. I needed to free up the center overflow section to hold my new Saphire Skimmer that I hope works like a charm

Here we go.

1st. I picked up some mesh "cloth" from Michael's hobby for 40 cents. This was roughly a single piece of paper size item that was a #7

2nd I cut a 9 inch length of it. Then rolled it into a cylinder and with a 3 hole overlap, used nylon ties (small ones) to clip the cylinder closed.
I then took the left over piece and cut a bottom roughly 3 inches in diameter and fastened that to one end using ties.

I added a couple of loops of tie at the top to help get it in and out of the back of the tank - turns out I really is not required.

Then I got a submersible LED light strip off eBay for $6.50 delivered. Do a search there for

"White 9-LED Aqua Rope Strip Light Coral Fish Reef Tank "

there are other models and prices but I had lots of 12V wall warts to power this little bugger. Here is what the light looks like.

Filled it with cheato and dropped the submersible LED light down in the middle of it and then dropped it in the back of the tank area.

There you go. This cloth stuff is rigid yet easy to work with. I will make another small box for carbon or other materials to go in outside chambers.
Thanks for looking.

Never thought of using it for that. I've used it to make a shield to stop fish from jumping into the rear chambers. Good idea. Is the LED light 12v or 120v?

LED is 12V very small wattage - but big enough light for this amount of cheato.

they add zero as I have put the lights on the outside looking in.

I was uncomfortable with the seal on the LEDs.

There is no added heat and the clear back glass offers little attenuation.

Do you have a pic of how you mounted the LED strip? How much of the vinyl backing did you remove from the tank? I already made the chaeto holder but I need to order the LED strip.

Thanks

well the JBJ 28 does not have any cover in the back. I used that aluminum tape (realy duct tape) to just tape it to the back glass.

got my lights in today, It did look a little flimsy so I hot glued the ends together where the wire meets.

How is the Budget Fuge working out

Just thought I would ask for an update as to how the budget Fuge is working. I'm new to the hobby and have a 29g biocube. I'm planning on turning the 2nd chamber into a fuge as well and this plus another design have given me inspiration. Just wondering how it is working out.

Did you buy the power adapter or wired it yourself? If you wired it yourself how did you do that?

wired it myself. Found an old plug sitting around, slice off the adapter, match up the wires and cramp together. You can buy a plug from radio shack.

Oh well I just bought the adapter from them since it can hold up to 8 so if they work out I was thinking about adding some to my tank to increase the light output.

I did a very similar thing with my Aquapod using a tiny led light that is used to light underwater fountains.
Dropped the cheato and the tiny bulb in with it.
It worked well, but I still had alot of cheato escaping the net and ending up clogging my Eheim pump every 3rd day in the 2nd chamber.
Finally, just got a skimmer from Kyle for my bday. :D
Yeah!!!!!
