This time of year we have holiday plans, free time, and time crunches to complete all we need to do.

"Don't do tank maintenance the day or a couple of days before leaving town" is advice Sanjay Joshi passes along at many of his talks. I try to follow this advice, but push this a bit by cleaning the skimmer, filling the ATO reservoir, etc.. I shouldn't really be doing that either. I've come back and seen my skimmer off.

This is advice I follow rigorously except yesterday. I did a water change after which my return would not power-up properly. Luckily there a small hardware store of parts in my garage left-over from years of reefing projects. I managed to quickly plumb in my mixing pump which will hold me over hopefully until I source a replacement.

I lucked out, but otherwise I'd need to cancel my plans while I chased down a return or deal with a lot of work upon returning.

Suggestion: try to schedule your maintenance at least 2 days before you leave, so you can make sure everything is good to go and deal with any unexpected issues.

Very wise you never know what tweak has gone wrong. I have done water flow adjustments where
problems didnt show up until a day later. If I hadn't been home, I hate to think.

The only change I make before a vacation is to put a bigger top off container...the rest remains the same.

For that matter, no additions or removal of any equipment should be done within two weeks of going out of town. You need to see how the system will adjust. Plan accordingly.

I totally agree. Great advise. I learned the hard way.
