Who is doing what to prepare for a supposedly active hurricane season?

@Tstew32

I just replaced the carb on my powermate 5700 genny. She purrs like a kitten now!

The carb for my Coleman 5000 genny will arrive next week.

Im considering a dual or tri gas kit for each of them so I can hook up the NG line in my back yard.

I have two batteries on one gyre. Fixing to get a couple for the other. I have six battery powered bubblers but need to get some D cell batteries.

I need to get a new generator. My little 800w harbor freight one crapped the bed.

I go out and start my generator every couple weeks to make sure it’s up and running but that’s about it.

I’m not prepared at all [emoji85][emoji85]

So, remember my other thread where I talked about "mistakes"? Well, let's add one more to the list!
I planned to get a Harbor Freight genny, but with so many costly mistakes recently (besides joining the exclusive Unemp Group) I ran out of funds for anything else.

Last time I went out to start mine it didn't start... I haven't done anything since then. I'm sure this will come around to bite me in the butt!

Thats why I replaced the carb on mine. It would fire up with starting fluid but then sputter out. So that told me something was up with carb.

I would definitely recommend you guys put fuel stabilizer after the season is over and drain your carb on the last run. I just started mine today gas is 3 years old so I will run all day then get new gas.

Adding higher octane fuel helps as well as this CRC injection cleaner if you got start up problems. I use on pressure washer and other lawn equipment.

Which genny is recommended a Predator 3,500 watt super quiet inverter or the standard noisy 8750 watt?
Also, assuming a few days power outage. How many hours a day would you run the generator for?

Can I like just buy one of those electric producing wheel things that u hook up to the bicycle to produce electricity except I’ll hook it up to my Dirtbike I’ve got about 10 gallons of gas for them 😂 i should seriously buy some more air bubblers for the time being, then I’ll invest in the v2 icecap back up batteries. When ever a storm is upon us we fill our ice chest with dry ice, so I’ll throw in a few cold packs in case the tanks get to hot.

What you’re describing is literally what a generator does haha! Also, those backup batteries aren’t gonna give you a whole lot of running time. For the cost, you’re better off getting a generator that can run all the essentials in your home and not just a single powerhead.

Yeah I want to drain the fuel, put new fuel in with a carb/injector cleaner and see if it gets going.

I used to do this. Really though I've never used it to begin with. It's too big to use often (6,500w).

I think one of those 800w ones that are found for $100-200 is the sweet spot. You can run that via an extension cord to run the essential items of the tank pretty well. They aren't nearly as loud as the bigger ones. I'm not going to run every item on the tank like normal. Then again if your house power is out,the next concern is temp. So having one that's powerful enough to run a chiller is pretty important.

I did have my electrician come in a put this plug on the outside of my house so I could plug the generator straight into the house. My generator is strong enough to either run the entire house without the a/c on.... or run just the a/c .. so I might just have to rotate if the power goes out for too long. I’ve lived here over 15 yrs and the only time it’s gone out unplanned is during IKE and that only lasted about 20mins. Not sure it’s worth investing any more money.

I've been using an old generator I got from a hoarde for the past 3 years that I fixed up. This thread has me paranoid so now I'm going to buy another smaller one to run my Toyotami portable AC unit and to have as a backup.

Depends on what you are trying to power really. If you are only trying to keep the power on in the aquarium the 3,500 is more than enough. If you are trying to power your fridge, tank and maybe a small ac unit the 8750 is what you want. I would personally go with the 8750 if you do not already own a generator that gives you more freedom to plug in.

If you are looking for smaller generators Honda is my go to, although the initial cost upfront can be hard to overcome it's absolutely worth it!!

I do not own a generator yet. I am basically looking to power DT and frag tank. Fridge would definitely be nice.
I asked because I thought a silent 3,500 watt sounds very appealing (57db) and reviews compare it to the Honda for less money.
It is also small and portable. The 8750 is a beast, really heavy (even with add-on wheels) and of course we know how loud those are.

Oh well, decisions, decisions... I just don't want this to be another item in my "extensive mistake list"

My generators are really no louder than a lawnmower or A/C compressor. While not quiet per say I would definitely not call them noisy.
