Essay " Why you Love This Hobby"







Alrighty then Marsh Family, we are letting this Valentine's month go with a short essay on why you LOVE this Hobby. Could be funny, sad, costly or romantic etc!!! Let's get out your thinking cap and draft up a quick one and share your LOVE for this HOBBY!

Honestly the relaxation to see and grow some cool coral and enjoying the view. But also the incredible community of reefers that help and encourage each other. during the hard times Houston has had from freeze, floods, hurricanes and power outages.

I have had fish tanks be it fresh water or salt since I was a little boy and the devil would call out my name...over 50 years... I have always been slim and on the hyper side for my age. My fish tanks have relaxed me. I have had my 125 gallons running for over 25 years now and love every minute watching and maintaining it. It is a hobby where you are forever learning new things. As well as enjoying the beauty of Marine life. There are no marine aquarium stores in my fair city of 75000. It ain't no Houston Texas but it is home. Looking back when I was into Octapuses I would travel 3 hours on an expressway to get them each way. Looking back when I had my Manderen fish I would travel over an hour each way to Detroit to get copods every 6 months. I am now into soft corals. Tangs and Damsels which include 2 different clowns. As well I have always liked to propagate and sell frags. Love of the hobby I have been to over 40 different zoo/ public aquariums in North America and Europe. Thanks Marsh for your friendly patient advice since April of ,08.

Why do I LOVE and HATE this hobby? I love this hobby because it does make you feel good about your corals are growing and not dying. What I hate about this hobby is the amount of $$$ you keep putting in and it won't stop.. EVEN when you said that's my last coral or fish. You are tempted to get another thing..It's the hobby that keeps on giving...lol

A lot of hobbies are like that....I just spent 350 u.s. conversion on a new train engine and 2 new box cars. Garden scale which included shipping. And that is a good deal in a private sale.

I love the beauty of the fish and corals, and the challenge of trying to create an environment that is both aesthetically pleasing and beneficial to the health of all the creatures.

I love the educational aspect of the hobby, such as letting people know that corals are animals, not plants. One of our granddaughters learned to count by counting the Asterina starfish in our old tank. She is very advanced for her age because there were so many of them.

I love that I never have to worry about piles of money accumulating without knowing what to do with it, because a reef tank will always solve this "problem" (not that I have this problem anyway).

I love the scientific aspects of the hobby, always trying to learn and understand more about chemistry and biology, as well as some of the cool new technology that keeps coming out. I love the various symbiotic relationships between creatures, such as the bacteria that keep the water safe for the fish. And who doesn't love the anemone/clownfish relationship? These relationships inspired me to write the following extremely mature and profound poem.

Hawkfish are red,
Hippo tangs are blue.
They eat food,
And corals eat their poo.

Buy tank, tell wife this is the most expensive part. Buy rocks, glue together, they fall apart, yell at the neighbor for no reason while you throw rocks down the street. Tell yourself I'll buy cheap lights, then buy expensive ones and lie to wife. Buy corals and fish too soon and complain on MARSH. Ask for advice and ignore. Get everything stable and beautiful, then want a new tank. Rinse and repeat.

I enjoy viewing the slice of ocean no matter how far away it is. The big and small inhabitants provide constant activity that begs to be observed and get lost in. I’m also am intrigued and captured by the puzzle of the gear that is the foundation of a healthy reef ecosystem in a closed environment.

For something fun to do I go on road trips to Niagara falls and back for 1 nighters at nice hotels with casino play vouchers...3 hours each way and stop off at marine stores and do other stuff too. It is a nice scenic but long expressway drive but love it. Just did it again after not for 3 years cus of covid got 2 new frags and a (new fish for 35 us convertion)..Just book another for mid March it is fun going to Niagara and checking out the Marine stores plus other stuff along the way....Nice Niagara hotels are not pricy off season....Thanks Marsh for your friendly patient advice since April of ,08.
