First and foremost, a big thanks to dh (Dennis) for hooking me up with a nice little nano for the daughter. You are the best, Dennis!

As much as I'd like to deck this thing out with some nice zoas and shrooms, my daughter has the final word (well... that and her mother). :D I have to just go with the flow since I already have a tank that is deemed "mine!" So without further ado.

Here's our 8g Galveston Nano. I hope you enjoy!

I believe this is a male Naked Goby. Kind of looks like a baby lawnmower blenny.

All three of these very little fish went right into a feeding frenzy when I fed them today. ;) Pretty cool little guys, and nice coloring.

I think these are bad snails. Not going in my reef, either way.

Strange sucker fish... I don't know what it is; so if anyone knows... ???

Just put 3 pieces of LR from my big tank in here... I guess it's not totally a Galveston tank, after all. :)

Some notable mentions for those of you looking to do this in the future...

- The SG was 1.030. I tested the water, and tested it again with my refractometer.
- I used freshly mixed saltwater. I made sure it was 1.030 and I will slowly lower it to 1.025-1.026.
- I know there's too many fish in this nano, but I plan on giving away some of them (heck, if it's possible).
- The damsels will tear up some flake food! The gobies will eat those garlic pellets. Don't know about those sucker fish and snails yet.

If there's anything I should know about any of these fish, please pipe up. :) Thanks and have a good one!

What you also need is a small crab and a Pep, Oh and to make it look like a real Galveston tank the water needs to be a bit more brown :D also a rock anemone or two would look nice.

I can't remember if the 8 gallon is acrylic or not but I caught one of those sucker fish and had it in a little 5 gallon acrylic tank and it's scraper scratched the acrylic everywhere it latched on to eat.

I think its a Flat-headed cling fish and they have scrapers for eating barnacles and small crustaceans.

D'oh! Looks like I'm heading to Galveston to get rid of some fish! I have two of them, and didn't know that. You're right... it is acrylic. Thanks John!

Hi, flipside.

That nano looks great!
Galveston Bay ecosystem tanks are fun and different. Your daughter (and you) can learn a lot about our local environment from those. I kept one for about 5 years before I converted to a reef tank.

That snail is a type of oyster drill and it will soon starve in your tank unless you feed it a lot of meat. If it dies in a tank that small, it will very quickly foul the whole thing.

I love those little damsel type fish.

good luck,
Steve

Well, at least I have the three damsels I can keep. LOL! I'll probably take all the fish/snails back to G-Town and set this little tank up as a reef. I have some softies in my big tank that I want out of there.

Thanks so much, Steve!

you should add an oyster or two to the tank. Most oysters in the bay systems come with lots of neat hitchhikers like boring sponges, porcelain crab, polycheate worms and barnacles. Also some small hermit crabs would round out the tank. Rock Anemones would also be a cool addition.

Those damsel fish are Sargeant majors (Abudefduf saxatilis). They are cool fish and do grow very aggressive as most damsels do. At max size only 2, maybe 3 would do well in a tank like that.

Yeah... I have two of those damsels left in the tank, and they are relentless toward one another. I added a bland looking GSP frag and a hammer coral in the tank. Seem to be doing okay but I'm not really liking this nano thing, tbh. It's hard to even pay it any mind with my other tank on the other wall...
