Just a quick question as I have not set one up before. its a 24 x 24 x 8 frag tank and its plumbed in separately from my display. I have a 29 gallon sump below it where I used Fiji mud as a substrate. There will be nothing but coral on plugs and maybe one fish (maybe). Seeing as though I have no live rock, will a cycle occur? I can take rock from my display into the sump and water change out from my display into my frag tank to deal with it if need be. Just curious, thanks.

If you are running independently there might be a small cycle. You can minimize it like any other with mature live rock. Would be pretty slight with very few causes of ammonia in the first place though (just one fish).

Ha, I feel ashamed if I post pics! I havent finished on the doors yet! Plus......... my tank stand is also a home for the dog....... aha. Long story there but making a door with glass inserts is entertaining.

I'm running a Frag tank in bypass from my main display tank since years in order to maintain just one water column.
It works great, but I experienced that I had to place the bypass pump into the sump upstream the filter socks, otherwise the frag tank suffers from the "too clean" water from the sump!

Good luck with the build, what Glass you wanna use?
I'm in the same situation and thought to use Black/Orange stained glass inside the doors, lil bit like Harley Davidson Style.

Happy Reefing,

I been debating about what type of glass to use for a while and its kept me from doing the doors (and this cold rainy weather). I have a nice fuge in the bottom that I will be growing some mangroves and chaeto so I do want to be able to see through to that. Im honestly debating using thick acrylic so nothing breaks (being so close to the ground) but I have had an awful time in the past cutting thicker acrylic.
