yes i think im going to go this route... im gonna do a 40gallon water change, drain the 100 gallons of RO into the salt container and add salt. The saltwater container should be fine but just in case i wont fill it up all the way and the fresh tank only has a couple inches in it. fingers crossed!
I’d personally do this. I wouldn’t risk your reservoirs gregg.

Keep in mind, it may not expand up, but maybe outwards.

I think one of the biggest concerns for me if already had my tank up and running right now is being able to maintain enough heat in the tank over a “possible” several day power outage.

When your Power goes out a lot of you will break out the generator, but what if this power outage lasts 4-7 days or even longer. When temps fall into the low 30’s and teens...do you have enough heater strength to keep the tank warm enough to save the coral and fish? Your house will likely get below 40 degrees inside unless you have a generator that runs the entire house and I know a few of you do, but the majority here do not.

Another thing to consider is the aquarium as well...if the inside temp is around 80 and the outside temp is below freezing. This will cause stress on the structure of the glass ???? I am not an expert I am just saying... might be something to look into ???

This is what worries me about cracking. Especially if it snows... ever poured hot water on a iced windshield only to see it crack?

I have two 100 gallon storage tanks in my backyard full of ro water and one with salt water.

my question is, if I lower the water level and they freeze will it rupture the tank or use the empty space to expand?

Just twist the top of the tote open so air can enter- other than that do nothing.

The tote will not burst due to ice/freezing but pressure build up so if you untwist the top cap you should be fine.

do your storage tanks have piping attached? A drain valve? That's a potential weak point. When I lived in IN, lots of folks in my neighborhood had above ground pools - they'd just lower the level in winter and let them freeze.
I had a tank in an unheated room, and in cold snap, I found my heaters couldn't keep up. But I covered the top and wrapped the sides with blankets and had no more problems. You could easily cut some pink styrofoam sheets from the hardware store and tape them around your outdoor tank.
