Global warming seems to be really screwing up the jet stream. North of jet stream Arctic air. South is G.O.M. air. I hate to sound like a party pooper but these events are going to happen more frequent now. I would consider the thought of insulating and enclosing permanently or temporarily.

Well one thing that he has got going for him is that heat rises. Looks like there is a roof over the aquarium. We are really seeing the effects of climate change up here. This is what winters used to be like from November to March. This winter it has only been this bitter cold for a week...looks like 1 more week of this and we could be done with it till next winter....possibly..

You got lucky, because most come from Dallas or down I-10 to deliver. They must be clear.
Nah they built a huge Amazon distribution warehouse off 99 between 10/290 close to the FedEx largest hub. My orders come really fast

on a related topic - it occurred to me my old truck might not have enough antifreeze (I've topped it off with water if needed), and frankly, I don't recall whether it has ethlyene or propylene glycol, so I can't rely on my old antifreeze tester. I checked to see if I could use my refractometer - but for those who might be thinking the same thing, the ranges don't overlap. I guess I'll just drain out a gallon and replace it with the gallon of AF I have in my garage.

Ya. Windshield washer fluid. Radiator antifreeze.. Drive slower and give yourself extra braking time... If you are not sure how icy the road is just give the brakes a very light tap just to see how it is. For trips put some blankets in the trunk...crackers ..if you get stuck. Better to over dress than under dress. Make sure your house plumbing does not freeze. enjoy the winter wonderlandd.

Our 20yr old geni finally crapped out on us this morning while the hubbs was doing a test run....so a quick run to home depot to pick up a new one and we are good to go. Still planning to rehab the old geni, but at least were covered for the next week should we lose power.

Be safe and warm everyone!

How much heater power do you typically need in the winter time?

How big a chiller in the summer? Just a normal chiller gets it done?
Last Winter was my first one, I ran 1500W and didn't have any issues. This year I had an issue with my Apex, apparently I was drawing too much power, so I bought an additional 600W titanium which I run on the apex and then the 5 x 300W Eheims are on a separate 20A circuit just in case.

As for the chiller, I went ahead and bought a 1 1/2 HP one, it is overkill for my set up, but I wanted to go big in case I decide to get a bigger tank in the future.

If you have devices that draw too much current for apex power bar you can use a RIB. Basically a relay. Control hooks up to Apex, load ties to regular outlet. If older apex would need to be a non triac outlet for control most likely. This is just an example. The make differently rated devices.

Guys this is just a triple cold front that happens once every so often. Check out this article about the snow storm in Houston in the winter of 1895. That year STILL holds records...study history and worry less.

Ok but.... While I’m not worried ( you can see my posts above), it is IMO irresponsible to not have a plan and some minimal preparation.

We keep these animals captive with no way to escape any of the weather related events that happen here. I have fish that due to the current ban in Hawaii are irreplaceable (or at the very least very expensive to replace). I have around 1k in LPS. So I have a generator and 20g of gasoline. Just in case. Mostly for the heaters. +battery powered air bubblers.

Very nice. I always wanted to try it, but with our hot summers and cold winter months I'm scared I'll get a big swing. That's awesome that you're actually doing it and have good success.

Emptied my storage tank last night and put the rodi on a slow boogie. Water flowed into the bin all last night and all day today. No issues so I emptied again today and I’ve got good make up coming out. I’m stockpiling do water like crazy but it’s keeping the system from freezing/cracking. Good luck out there guys. Hope everyone stays safe and warm.
