Galveston Collection Trip (1 Viewer)

Hello MARSH,

I am not new to the hobby but I am new to MARSH. I will be attending a conference in Galveston next week on August 17th. I've never been collecting in that area and would love some tips and tricks on what I can find and where I can find it. I was thinking of collecting late that afternoon and evening if anyone was interested in joining me. Thanks everyone.

P.S.

I'm especially interested in finding a dwarf octopus if anyone knows where I could catch them.

As for an octopus I have been looking for about three years!!! If you find one please tell me where, when, how? You can find various squid mostly in the spring time, but it has rained alot so they may still be in abundance.

I might be able to come on the 17 if you don't mind not sure yet though.

I have a 12 gallon cylinder mixed reef. I have an assortment of inverts (porcelain crabs, emerald crab, decorator crab, sargassum shrimps, nassarius snails, turbo snails, tub worms,...) a variety of LPS and soft corals, a few mollusks, a large mangrove, some sponges.

My bucket list for collection trips is squid, octopus, sargassum fish, sea horses, anemones, sponges, corals, and plants. Of course not all of this would go in the same tank. I am working on a 40 gallon breeding setup for dwarf octopus that will contain native organisms.

Where are you located?
How often do you plan on coming down?

For a 12 gallon I would say maybe a couple naked gobies or darter gobies. Maybe a pistol shrimp and peppermint shrimp. Anemones and snails.

If you come down to collect I have a black mangrove you can have for now. If you wait till winter and all the grazers go back off shore we have a few macros you can collect. Not much seaweed so I think sargassum fish is out. I did catch one frog fish and a file fish at the beginning of seaweed season but they were tiny. You may be able to con one of the fisherman on the wharf out of a octopus. You can pick up anemones on the beach jetties all year just watch out for the whistle blowers. Not much for coral and sponges. You can find stray sponges every now and then but they are hard to find.

I live in North Austin and go to school in College Station. I don't plan to make too many trips to Galveston as I do all of my collecting in Port A. and Rockport. The only fish I have right now is a rainsford goby. What do you mean by "watch out for the whistle blowers?" I'd like to find some reef safe starfish if there are any. I am at work right now. I'll try to post some pictures of my tank tomorrow.

The whistle blowers are the lifeguards they wont let you play in the rocks by the water line!! Starfish are few and far between I would have to show you how to get them. But basically they live on the tube worms that you see in the sand covered in shell you have to inspect really well. Or scrape the bottom of the jetty rocks with a net as deep as you can get. You will pull up what looks like little mud clumps which is really amphipod homes. They will be mixed in with the dirt. I see why you want to snorkel now port aransas and rock port are alot clearer.

I found a scientific article that claims O. Mercatoris prefers shallow (less than 5 meters) water seagrass beds and can be found under rocks and within empty shells. I read in another thread that you know of some seagrass beds around Galveston. Would you be willing to show these to me? I'd like to explore them during the day to see if we can find a few of these animals.

Sure let me see if I can take a picture of my Google earth I have a few of them pinned. The grass bed that I manage is only in about 2ft during summer and6in to mostly exposed for the winter. Like I said I have been to this spot about once a week for a long time and no octopus. The only thing I ask is if you see any trash pick it up please. And maybe if you see any seagrass plugs washed up stick them back in the mud.

Well I have good news and bad news!! Good news is I am going collecting tomorrow the bad news is I only have about an hour or so and not till about 9pm. If you still want to go hit me up. Between you and marsh collecting it only cost me two back massages and three night putting the kids to bed!!
