I've been out of reefing for about 5 years and my wife and myself are planning a new tank this coming spring after we move to League City. Our plan is to build a peninsula style tank to go between the living room and dining room and either a 160 or a 225 custome. I've never done a tank this size so any help would be appreciated.

Howdy! Can you help get us in the ballpark of what specific ways you are looking for some help either for your 40g apartment build or for your future large peninsula build? Not knowing what type of tank and system you previously had experience with makes us not sure where/how to help you. Certainly one area you can start with is filling in the 5 year gap of y'alls knowledge base. I took a break from keeping corals (just had a fish only tank) in the same timeframe as you and was surprised by how out of date my knowledge had become. There are many online video resources that you could start with for sure.

I also definitely recommend considering becoming a member of MARSH. So many smart folks on here that can help. Definitely not required, but I found this forum to be a tremendous and friendly resource to say the least and membership definitely has its advantages! Sorry for the plug for MARSH but many folks on here have been a HUGE help for me!

For your 40g apartment build, depending on your budget, there have been several turn key 40g systems up for sale on MARSH here recently. You should definitely browse through the Used Equipment Selling/Trading (WTS/WTT) forum for a tank or complete system you could possibly start with.

Well my first tank was a 90. It was a hogpoge of used equipment that either work half the time or bairley worked at all. The only things I could count on were the skimmer and the return pump. I had lps softies and zoas as well as 2 clowns a starry eyed blend 6 line wrasse and others I cant remember. I want to do better and make my tank look better than the first time. Plans are for a kalk reactor, carbon reactor, bio pellets, uv filter, ato, leds, and more than 1 power head.

So this is what I'm looking at for coral. It will be lps dominant, my rock scape is going to be two islands with as much sand base as I can get with 2 medium size islands. For flow I'm bouncing between using 2 AI nero 3s or one gyre. For lighting I'm trying to decide between 2 AI hydra 32's or 2 AI prime 16hd's. My skimmer is a simplicity 120 and I'm going to start with a sicce 3 then upgrade to a reef octopus varios 2.
