I have a HOB overflow as well but it doesn't have a venturi fitting on it. Are you sure it is a venturi fitting or is it the connector for a lift pump? I have a friend that uses the CPR overflow and his has a lift pump hooked up to it so that if he loses power it will automatically start suction again. I'm actually not using any type of valve from my overflow. To service any part of my tank or for water changes, I simply unplug my return pump. When I plug it back in, everything restarts. If I clean the u-tube, I restart it with a lift pump though.

Just my two pennies worth.

Not sure anymore I thought that the Venturi was a lift pump. is a lift pump all I need to get the siphon started if so does it run all the Time so If power goes out it will start the siphon again. Do you know were I can get one.

The venturi valve lets air mix in with the water coming through the pump for use with a skimmer most of the time. The setup that my buddy runs keeps the lift pump running all the time. That way if the power goes off and comes back on while he isn't home it starts back up. I live down on the SE side of Houston so most of my shopping is at BAA and All About Fish. I know Mihn normally keeps them but I'm sure shops up closer to the North side stock them. Mine was like $15 bucks.

When I have to restart siphon in the U-tube I just take a small piece of airline tubing and put one end in the highest part of the U and suck the air out...try not to get it in your mouth though.
