How many AI Prime HD's needed for a soft/lps tank? (1 Viewer)

I was watching a video from BRS about the AI Prime HD lights and it got me to thinking about my lighting for the soon to be complete 75G build. Would a pair of Prime HD's work for a 75G tank? The coverage area is reported to be 24X24 per light and the 75G is 48X18X21 with a top center support bar. I have a mix of soft/leather and LPS corals and am not planning on running SPS in it for at least a year or so. I was thinking that if I got a pair of them and mount one over the center of either side of the tank about 8 inches up they should provide enough par for the current corals I have. Later on when I want to start adding SPS I can add another pair of them spaced apart to bring the total to four.

Does anyone have experience with these specific lights in a similar configuration and can let me know if this will work?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like they max out at 45w each , you may get away with softies and place the lps up on the higher rock. I would get a hold of the MARSH Par meter and par it out to see what are the real numbers once your tank is up and running. Or you can always get those Black box lights at 165w each that will for sure grow anything you want.

I thought about the black box lights but after seeing the results of the par testing done by BRS I decided to go with a different setup. While the black box lights do put out a high par level the lenses do not disperse the light enough and create a massive hot spot directly under the lamps. That's why I was looking at the Prime HD's instead and start with two then add two more a little down the road. There are newer light designs out that have caught my eye such as the new Evergrow IT50.. series lights. They are supposed to be using Cree LED's with 6 channel adjustment capability. These are the exact same thing as the Reef Breeder Photon V2 lights but are a tad pricey for off brand LED lights.

I can assure you the tests brs did do not reflect my experience. They said all black boxes were essentially the same. They aren’t. I have the mars aqua LEDs and grow sps like mad. If I crank them all the way, I get 1300 par on top of my rocks.

I was a little dubious to their results as they do seem rather jaded towards them, siding for high end brands instead. The ones I had been looking at were a pair of these.

I am interested in these due to it appears they are using different lenses than many of the other black box units, as well as they list they actually have uv leds in them where most of the others don't.

What height did you have yours mounted at? I was considering making a mount to hang them at 8-10" above the surface.
