:? Hi everybody. I am relatively new to the hobby and have just encountered my first ich infection. I have a 75 gal. w/ bio ball filtration and it is a FOWLR tank. I just got back from Bay Area Aquarium and they advised me to use Ich Attack in the tank and to quarantine the infected fish to treat them with Formalin. I treated the fish and started to prepare a gallon of water to mix in the Ich Attack and noticed that it was a brownish color. Now my question is, does this stuff turn your tank brown or any other color and does this stuff even work?If not, does anyone have any suggestions that can be helpful in my ich battle? I would really appreciate any advice and ideas. Thanks in advance!

i used ich attack when i had a ich outbreak.....every fish i put in my tank a while back would get ich......i dosed everyday for about 2-3 weeks to make sure the ich was being treated.......when i used it, the ich spots lessened and then when i was getting frustrated that at the third week, i could still see ich spots on my clownfish, i stopped because ich attack is sort of costly.......i think 12 bucks for a bottle and i dosed like 2-3x the normal cause the ich was bad.........when i stopped the next couple days all the ich was gone on my clownfish and tang, but sometimes if you do put in excessive amounts it will turn your water a brownish tinge, but if you just dose as directed, it should be no problem

You have to get your fish stronger so that their own immune systems keeps them from getting ick.

That being said ich attack does work so a short period.

Many of us old farts really like to use concentrated garlic to boost fish immune status and kill of ick.

+1 on the garlic concentrate. I've also had very good luck with fresh garlic in the food. I mix my food ahead, a week at a time. I use a garlic press and put it in with the food and let it sit overnight before the first feeding. The fish seem to love it and no signs of ick. (knock on wood)

Can you share your experience with the Formalin?
I used it on my Hippo tang a few days ago and the result was not good.

I would not mess with formalin for a while until you are a bit more experienced.

Right now try the garlic

i'm not a big fan of chemicals. that being said, i have fought ich in the past with massive water changes and heavy feeding and the ich would clear up overnight.

there's a few reasons why you may be getting ich:
-your water quality is not where it's supposed to be
-your fish is stressed due to improper diet or aggressive tank mates
-you have introduced a immunocompromised fish with ich on it

a massive water change (or several smaller ones) along with the use of garlic and aggressive feeding will rid you of ich.

if the ich is not bad, then i would not recommend putting them into a quarantine/hospital tank. transferring a fish can be very very stressful. you have to catch the fish, put them into a smaller/unfamiliar habitat, and the quarantine/hospital tank may not have adequate filtration (ammonia spikes are frequent in a qt tank).

a quarantine tank should be used prior to introducing new fish into your system. this way you don't introduce a foreign parasite into your system.

since ich is a free-floating parasite (cryptocaryon irritans) a uv sterilzer will work great if you know how to properly use it. the flow through the sterilizer has to be slow enough to kill the desired organisms but still fast enough to get enough of the aquarium turned over. but they are very effective as well.

ich attack outcome.....

Well, the ich attack was an expensive mistake. And the formalin almost killed my fish. I know this is unethical but Bay Area Aquarium is where all my problems started. First with a bad fish and then with the horrible advise. Needless to say, I will not be going there anymore. I have spent a lot of money there only to be treated like garbage. I hope all you people that are reading this will understand that Bay Area Aquarium is a joke and Minh Lee has no bussiness being in this industry. One very good thing that did come out of all this is that I have met some really smart and helpful people. I would have to give most of the credit to Kevin at All About Fish. Not only did he treat me with respect but he was also willing to take my fish and cure them of all the illnesses that was caused by Bay Area Aquarium's bad fish. So, if someone out there needs good advise on their aquarium or good clean fish and supplies, I recommend going to All About Fish.
