I had a supplier in hawaii he was selling me yellow tangs for $5 coulda shoulda ordered a box full. Was bringing in too many crosshatch triggers. My last shipment had 4 red wrasses for $5 each, I immediately called him back and said I want 20 more, they were beautiful. He said they had shut them down that day, I was sick over not getting a big school of those wrasses

I don't think its permanent. They still have follow up environmental impact studies to do. The previous studies did not support the activists claims of dwindling numbers in the collection sites studied, they just have a louder voice than those who were against the closure of the fishery. My guess is it will be closed 1 1/2 - 2yrs and then they will slowly and selectively start to re-issue permits, but with very strict guidelines and very limited quantity as to who those permits are issued to...when (not if) it re-opens it will be a completely different fishery for sure. The economic impact in Hawaii and its locals is too big for them to indefinitely issue a complete and permanent shut down. Thats just my .02

Some of our beloved "Hawaii" fish will still pop up on the market thanks to the Christmas and other close neighboring islands that some fish can also be found...problem for the time being with that is still flights. There are no flights into Honolulu from the Christmas Islands right now because of Covid.

Until then, I'm thankful for the few captive breeding fish programs that we do have.
I have to say I found about this yesterday from Dennis when he was telling me that the price of yellow tangs went up to over 100 each.

I can't tell if the people pushing for this type of legislation are completely ignorant or have ulterior motives. It reminds me of diving in Cozumel where the locals put on a face while everyone's watching touting conservation ... yada yada and then you look over by the piers and you see 3 cruise boats docking.

Sounds great for the reef... How disappointing.

Yeah, I have someone that I am talking to about a pair of flame wrasse and in just the 6 hrs that I was chatting with him, his price on the female went up because the prices in Hawaii went up.....and he already had them in stock, wasn't even coming from the diver. I know that they will become another rare fish to find on the market because they only come out of Hawaii so I am trying to decide if I wanna grab a pair or not.

I know the name of the guy that is pushing it, He has been trying for years. I just can't recall his name at the moment, but he is just another environmentalist. It is disappointing because the arguments are specifically against the commercial export for the hobbyist/home aquaria trade. Forget what happens on the islands....
