How will I know if the paint leaches anything into the system? None of it will be submerged but still…what would I look for???

Looks awesome! Not sure about what to look for, but maybe soak them overnight in RO water if you are worried about it. They will probably clean up well enough that you won't have any problems since they are dry anyway.
Thnx! Almost done with it...just don't want to go through all this and destroy what Im building with the build itself lol.

Ok so I spoke with some people at BRS who state that the safe bet is to coat with a non toxic epoxy resin? Sounds like it should work but we will have to see if it is still reactive to the black light after...

Most of the time your skimmer will tell you right away if something out of the ordinary got into the tank. Near or total lack of foam development, oil based substance usually to blame. Skimmer going nuts and over flowing? That's well pretty much anything else than your run-of-the-mill organic waste. Like it will when putting epoxy putty to mount a frag, or chemi-clean etc. etc.

Best bet would be to run Purigen and carbon especially if the skimmer freaks out to help remove any possible volatile compounds from the paint if it had not completely cured before exposing the tank to it.

As for the paint showing up under UV after coating it with epoxy, is all depends if the epoxy has any level of uv blocking capabilities.

I bought some vinyl stickers once and was curious if they were reef safe. I threw one in my 20 gallon reef tank for a week or two to find out. Turns out, it was reef safe. We got to our current level of understanding about what's reef safe and not by doing real life tests like this. Not everyone is up for the gamble, but those that do, provide the community with great insight.

Black lights emit UVA. UV breaks down epoxy causing it to yellow. How it stands up to specifically UVA... dunno and did not get any good google results, but did not try very hard.

The rate of yellowing under a LED or florescent black light will be significantly less than compared to the same item when exposed to natural sunlight. What would take say 1-2 years to show yellowing or fading under sunlight may take decades to never from an LED or florescent light source.

I always used Krylon fusion and no issues. Last build I did two years ago and still looks the same as when I put it on. Salt creep didn’t appear to have any issues and I had a stocked sps tank before the freeze.

Yea but the fusion isn’t the same…it has a sealer in it and this fluorescent is flat and “open” feeling
