Hello... I have had my 125g tank up for about 6 months now. I bought a used skimmer from another marsh guest. The very next morning I lost 3 lionfish and 1 trigger. I disconnected the skimmer immediately and still continued to lose fish. I did a 50% water change 3 days later. I also did another 20% last weekend. I bought a couple of damsels that last 5 days before they died. The only livestock I have left from the beginning are my 2 white cheeked eels. Can anyone tell me what could have possibly happened? About to restock my tank in 2 weeks. Thanks for all comments.

Sorry to hear about your loss. What is your water para? It's hard to diagnose your problem without knowing your water parameter.

DO NOT add any livestock to your tank if you do not know what the problem is. You need to find the problem, fix it, and then wait a week or two before you add any more fish.

I tested my water and the parameters were good. Fish gallery did a second test with the same results. They are suggesting that possibly a chemical was used to clean the skimmer. Should I just a 100% water change? My tanks looks good even my rocks have a lot of growth and coraline. The gentlemen at fish gallery were also stumped....

That article was very helpful! I am doing another 20% tonight. The difficulty is I live on the 3rd floor with no elevator!!!!!!!!! I will keep you posted. Thank you for all the comments. I don't wanna lose another $700.00 in livestock. If you guys hear of anything else helpful please share.

I did not use anything but freshwater to clean it. My water params are

Ammonia .25
Trates 5.0
Trites 0
Ph 8.2

You really shouldn't have detectable ammonia. Do you know if it was at that level before the fish started dying or only after?

My guess it was the skimmer that had something in it. Question is what have you done with the skimmer???

With my lions and triggers I have always had low trates. I have not reconnected the sump. Found out its actually too big for my sump. I bought a few damsels this past weekend and they are still alive. <Crossed fingers>. I think maybe one more 20% water may be in order. All of this info has been great and really helped.

Not enough info to make a guess but from what I can tell I would not say the skimmer had anything to do with it.

Background like tank set up, age, livestock, etc would help a lot.

You also mentioned you had ammonia and took the sump offline.
That is a deadly combination to have bacteria trying to keep up and then cutting off some of the bacteria population by offlining the sump. i would be looking more at why the ammonia is present and not so much the skimmer.

You guys are right. I think it was a combination of ammonia and the skimmer. I bought a couple of damsels and the are still alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to do partial water changs often to dilute what was ever in my tank. I will keep you guys posted.
