I am planning to connect 2 reactors, one for carbon and one for pearls. My idea is to have the first reactor feed the second reactor prior to being discharged back into the sump. What I was wondering is if there is any logic or reasoning as to what media should be first, the carbon or the pearls 🤷‍♀️

For reference, this will be used on my shallow leather tank. The only live stock is 2 pipe fish, 1 x-small filefish and 2 xx-small Lennardi (less than 1" long) babies and a CUC. Otherwise its all leathers and mushrooms for now, but I am planning to add zoas and other NPS softies. Total water volume is about 18-20 gls.

I would think you would have to much flow going through carbon to satisfy the Bio Pellets.

I was thinking of that and was already considering increasing the flow from my pump, but I wanted to get them running first to see if there would be enough flow as is to get the pearls tumbling. I think it would be possible because the recommended volume of each media for my water volume is very minimal.

i didn't think there was a upper flow limit for carbon media. Just gotta make sure the carbon doesnt tumble, but you want the biopellets to tumble.

Yes, I am more focused on the pearls having enough upward flow to tumble should I put the carbon in the first reactor instead of the pearls. I am using larger carbon pellets and positioning the plates with in the chamber as to not allow for any tumbling, so I am not concerned about that.

I don't know that you link the two together with the same pump. First, a lot of "gunk" comes off of those pellets. I have to clean my reactor once a month. That "gunk" would clog up your carbon in the second chamber. Second, as stated above, the pellets need considerably more flow than the carbon does. You could put a ball valve between the two and receive some pressure but that would mean the pellets would have to go before the carbon, which still doesn't solve the gunk problem.

I was gonna say that pellets in a reactor with carbon sounded weird to me because they are so different in how you want them to move or not in the reactor. Maybe do pellets in both chambers and put the carbon in a bag?
