Would anyone here be interested in a friendly competition of building a sub ten gallon nano tank?

I was given a 7 gallon cube for Christmas and thought it might be fun if we could get some kind of competition going. I have seen this done on some other forums...just testing the waters to see if anyone is interested and/or has any ideas of how to do it.

Any idea what rules or timeframe we should go by? Maybe if we get a few other ppl, one of the sponsors would toss in something for the winner??

I borrowed these rules from another board (i will write them up as new once we agree on the details).

What do you guys think?
Contest Dates: JANUARY 31-APRIL 30, 2013
Last Day to Enter: JANUARY 21, 2013
Last Day to Add Livestock: MARCH 15, 2013
Judging Complete: MAY 5, 2013
Free to Enter

Grand Prize: TBD

Additional Prizes: TBD

Tank size:

  • Display tank: 10g or less
  • Sump: No larger than Display tank

Spending Limit on livestock:
There is a $250 spending limit on corals, anemones, inverts, and fish. Receipts and pictures of livestock must be posted in your build thread to keep track of spending limit.

Existing Corals:
You may use existing livestock from your personal collection, but you will need to take pictures, assign the fair market price and subtract that from your spending limit. For existing & traded livestock, a dollar value along with a picture of the livestock must be posted in the build thread.

There Are No Limits On:

  • Live rock, man-made structures, or substrate
  • Equipment (ex. Heater, pump, skimmer, power head(s), reactor(s))

Loss of Livestock:
As the purpose of this contest is to build and maintain a healthy and sustainable nano tank, any losses in livestock must be documented and may have an impact on judging.

Additional Rules:

  • You may begin construction and/or cycling at any time, however, livestock cannot be added before January 31, 2013. To insure this compliance, on January 30, 2013, we will make an announcement with instructions for each contestant to place a specific item in their tank and photograph it to verify the tank is not stocked. This photo MUST be posted in your build thread prior to adding livestock.
  • Each contestant will need to start a build. This build thread MUST be updated a minimum of twice per month WITH pictures and these updates must be at least 7 days apart. Contestants are encouraged and welcome to update more frequently.
  • You may use pre-cured live rock.

Tara...bring it! I would like to see you run a nano without my help/doing it for you but still letting you call it yours! Lol.

D2, I would rather leave the equipment choices up to the entrants. I know some guys already have their small tanks (I do). That being said, if we can get more participation/interest by having a "NASCAR" style equipment set, I'd buy another pico.

I guess this rules it out for me, I put a mini maxi and a hermit crab in mine already, unless I could be granted a waiver ?

Still trying to work out the kinks. I am working to get some prizes and stuff as well as some rules that would be fair for everyone.

Anyone else interested??

Repost, sry

But another thought for those if us who got a nano for Xmas and have already started it. As long a we have documentation for the first item we put in the tank (date) could we subtract the difference in dates from the date we have to submit final pictures

Don't think I am going to have the build off. Only a handful of people showing interest, and the majority have already started their tanks. As well, I don't want to cause any issues while trying to round up some prizes.

That being said, if anyone in the future wants to organize a tank build off or competition, I'm in.
