Since it’s related to our hobby I post it here.

I renewed my electric contract -dang rate doubled in price. I know reef tanks are way more efficient nowadays with LEDs and variable speed pumps but still our tanks uses a lot of energy. I also need to change the thermostat setting on AC hopefully I don’t hear complaints. 😂😂😂

I use about 2600-2800 KW on average…

I just pulled the trigger on solar. When I went to reup, it was facing $.18-.20 per kWh. My friends mentioned that its just a spike right now and it should go back down later. Just sucks to sign up for a contract right now though.

This summer is gonna hurt.

I just signed 12 months about 3 months ago. $0.13 per kw/hr. I already thought it was too expensive but begrudgingly bought. Now I’m glad. Electricity is going to be (already is) hella expensive.

I'm on a 2 year plan that is one of those free nights deals. It's 15.56c/kwh during the day (which was expensive when I signed) + center point whatever and free 8pm to 6am. We switched everything we could to mostly at night, including running the air con all night to chill the house down so it only needs to come on again around 1-2pm. Last bill was 1904kwh and 1267 we used during the free period, which works out as an avg of 6.8c/kwh. It's not a strategy that works for everyone, but we've saved tonnes, and I honestly think they will refuse to renew us when 2 years is up!

I keep the house at 73 and I'm in the last year of my 3 yr plan of 7.8cents. I used around 4100kw / day. Hope to have solar by the time contract is up. I'm enjoying $200 energy bills.

New contract is at ~$0.13 per kw. Yeah we keep the house at 72 plus I got 4 pumps on the pool (2HP, 2HP, 1.5HP, 1HP) that's consuming some serious power. And these are old school Hayward water pumps not variable speed.

I would definitely do solar one day but I prefer owning my own equipment - not leasing.

Im not leasing. but had to take a loan out to buy it...... so

If you have enough land and don't mind doing a ground mount, you can save a ton of money doing your own system. Especially if you have it just powering the poor. pool.
edit: lol weird typo

With oil(cl) hitting $120 and Gasoline(rbob) trading at an all time high $4.3, expect to see $5 at the pumps. Natural gas (ng) trading at 3xs normal price avg $8 right now .......... electricity rates aren't going down for a long time. I really don't think much of anything will come back down for a while honestly... brace yourselves

yea... thats why i conviced the wife it was time to go solar.

that and the fact we lost power 6-7 times in the last 6 months. sometimes for 8-9 hours or more. I was trying to keep sps, but trying to get parameters back after a long power outage sucks.

- power dies
- vortech battery keeps everything alive
- after power turns back on sps alk consumption stalls for a day or two as things get back to normal, alk spikes
- lay off dosing for a while to get things normal
- have to closely monitor alk consumption and dose accordingly
- tweak dosing numbers back to regular alk consumption
- wait for the next power outage
- regret getting back into the hobby
- drink heavily while crying into my reef tank
- wait for next power outage

New contract is at ~$0.13 per kw.

PLUS Centerpoint delivery charges? Always make sure to read their electricity facts label. These bastards are sneaky.

i just looked at Champion’s site, could only find 16.9c or so with a base charge of around .13c PLUS Centerpoint delivery fee.

can You share the plan name and contract length as I’m about to have to switch within the next two weeks. I’m paying about .9c/kWh now.

A good place to start is powertochoose.org

It used to really good but then the lobbyists (or whoever) got a hold of it and now it’s pretty tricky. For some reason the pricing examples are only to 2000 kw/hrs. So while pricing is somewhat transparent, they use tricks like x rate for 500-1000 kw/hrs, x rate for 1000 to 2000 and then a higher rate for anything above 2000 kw/hrs but that is not shown because it is only transparent up to the 2000kw/hrs. It does give you the ability to search and filter plans though and the rates are pretty decent.

I've been to all the "power to choose"-type sites and understand how to compare apples to apples. Reading the EFLs, currently the best I can find is ~$0.10 energy charge (without the Centerpoint delivery charge), and that's only for a 5 yr contract. The cost of my expiring rate is just under $0.06 per kWh. Everything that's for a contract of 2 yrs or less is $0.13 or higher (again, not including the Centerpoint charge).
