Did you see that some people managed to modify the software on the model s plaid removing the speed limiter and got it over 200mph? Supposedly Tesla is going to offer a $20k addon of tires/wheels/brakes and a bump to 200mph on the limiter.

Yeah I saw a video of uncle Chet going into a wall at 200 mph? That guy seems like he wants his life to end. Takes all the safety stuff out of the car, modifies the car and brakes and then sends it. 200 mph into a wall. That was some crazy stuff. If I get an electric car I will be fine with not modifying it. I’m not a fan of messing with a 700 volt electrical system I know nothing about. I went to the gas station yesterday with my Mini and it declined my card at the pump. Plus it’s always busy. So I definitely see the appeal of electric cars. Get home, plug her in, and she’s ready for the next day. I don’t think I’ve extracted enough money from my Mini yet and my wife deserves a car first, lol!

What charger are you using at home? Do you think a 120v charger would be sufficient for daily use? I imagine the 120v may not be as efficient as a 220v charger and certainly not faster. We’ve been looking at cars for my wife, but haven’t considered any electric as of yet. I would definitely consider one and if the 120v plug in my garage would be sufficient to keep it charged for her daily commute of 50 miles round trip it would be more appealing.

You can get a rough idea on if a standard outlet will be enough.
If you assume 0.25kWh/mi aka 4mi for each kWh and look at a standard 120v 15A outlet. That outlet can technically deliver 1,800W but lets go with 1,500W. At that, assuming no other loss you would be getting 6 mi/h charge. Knock that to 5mi/h to have a buffer in calculations and because I like easy math, and she would need to have the car plugged in 10h at night to cover the days 50mi round trip. Less if she can plug in at work.

You could also use that to figure out rough increase of elec cost. 5 days a week times 4.33 weeks a month times 50 miles gets you 1,082 miles and that times 0.25 gets you 270kWh elec a month. Current rates being ~20cents/kWh gets you around $54/mo in electricity. Reality will most likely have you 10-20% higher than that due to round trip charging losses and standby usage.

If you have a 30A 240v dryer outlet in your garage you can use that to charge at around 4x the speed. Even if there is a dryer hooked upto it, there is a company that sells an auto switch charger thing that allows you to use the outlet for your dryer and charger.

Yeah looks like a 120v wouldn’t work. My laundry room is on the same wall as our garage and I have a gas dryer so the 220v plug in there is unused. I’m sure we could tap into that circuit to get a 240v charger in the garage if needed. I would have to reconfigure some things and put her parking space on the other side of the garage.

I have a 30A in my garage. went to home depot, got the right sized romex and abandoned the old outlet, ran a new romex and installed the right outlet for about 50 bux. I wouldnt consider using a 120V for primary charging. 30A is a good midpoint for charging, i can bring it home dead empty at 8 or 9, ready in the morning. I drive enough to justify the savings plus i'm expensing the mileage for work. I basically drive it for free. Here's my rolling 30 day costs to drive. I had to break down and use a supercharger last week, left the car at the airport in Sentry mode, ate up some battery.

I think its insane to fork out 500 bux a month in go-juice.

do you get a check after so often?
Reliant does not pay out credits and my old plan rolled them over. Guy on the phone was sure to tell me that the new plan does not roll over credits. So, new plan, any excess generation will go to the grid for free. The guy on the phone also assured me I could offset everything for a zero bill, but the way the contract specifies makes me think that will not happen.

More providers have buyback than a year ago, but they are getting confusing and complicated.
