Thanks for the comments. Here is an updated pic. The rock scape I'm sure will change once corals start being added. My son is really enjoying his tank. Temp has been steady around 81-82.

We have corals

My son purchased his first corals last weekend and they are adjusting well. They were all from City Pets $5 frag tank, which was perfect for his college budget. I had an issue with one of the ballast's as I used solid core wire and this put stress an the solder joints as the canopy lid was opened and closed. The stress caused the solder joints to fracture and ultimately damage the ballast. No big deal, I grabbed another $2 bulb and wired it up with stranded wire and were back in business. Here's a few pics. Let me know what you think as your input is appreciated.

enjoying this thread, have you got any updates?

Thanks for the comments. This has been a fun project for the both of us. I changed to a different filter that is in the pics. I found one at the dollar store and thought I would give it a try as it had room for a heater and a fuge. I figured why not it's only a $1. It seems to be working fine after a few mods. We haven't added any new corals except for a mushroom and some gsp.

This is the filter that I'm using.

Looks very nice! My daughter wants a tank for herself, so I might end up doing a budget build too.

Where did you get that filter? Looks like a bargain to me. Did they have any more?

Love those $5 frags for a budget. I have a few from City Pets and one from 3CC. It is the best looking one of them all, so I need to get some more this weekend.

trb thanks for the compliment. I got the filter at King Dollar in Tomball. They had at least 50 of them, but that was a month ago. The $5 frags are the best, we will be going to 3CC this Friday to take a look.

tank update

My son promised an update but he's been busy with finals, so I will do it for him. It's a little dirty as the glass needs to be be cleaned but other than that it has been doing really well. The coral growth has been better than my nanocube, he's using a different salt than I am, I wonder if that's it. Still need to add black background. Anyway enough talk, here's a few pics.
