I'm thinking about getting a Nikon D800e. What is the best carry around lens? It will be use for portraits and landscapes. Thx for any advises or suggestion.

The zoom will be more versatile. 85mm is pretty long for a walk around lens.
That 24-70 is part of the holy trinity... with the 12-24 and 70-200vr being the other two.
The 70-200 is THE lens imho. I love this for portraits.

Here's another thought.
Get the 24-70. This will cover most of your bases for now.
Later, you are going to want a macro for tank shots, right? Get the 105vr. Awesome lens and makes a great portrait lens.

The 85 i would get only if you really really want a dedicated portrait lens. It will excel at this. I just question whether you need that right now.

Thx Dennis
I thought about the 70-200 but man that lens is big. Do you think the 24-70 are as good for portraits compared to the 85mm? I picked those two lens because of the sizes. I didn't want to have two many lens in the bag.

How about just the 105mm vr for portraits and macro shot? If this works then I don't have to get another lens. What are your thoughts on just the 105mm vr?

Yes, the 105 is very very nice for portraits. It's just slower to lock focus sometimes, so moving children can be a little bit more of a challenge. ;)
