People have died dude. So yeah it is the worst.

We don't need weather phenomena described to us, although we Texans would sure appreciate an explanation for why public utilities have failed the people during our most vulnerable time.

I too have lived in the north; I too have trudged to school in the middle of a blizzard because a little snow doesn't make northerners flinch. But I - and everyone including local infrastructure - was prepared for the ice.

Houston rarely ever gets freezing temperatures, never mind a prolonged hard freeze with ice that nobody know how to drive in. We were told to expect planned rolling outages. NOBODY expected for the power infrastructure to just... fail. Please have some empathy and imagine if:
1) the weather were abnormally freezing and
2) your power went out unexpectedly with zero updates on when it's coming back and
3) cell service / internet is spotty or nonexistent so you have no way of finding out how to cope and
4) you don't have a fireplace or if you do, you don't know how to use it, because after all this is Houston and
5) you have exotic animals reliant on powered enclosures, on top of young children and/or at risk family members to take care of in your 40 degree home.

People have died because no one (especially our government) was prepared for the accumulation of all these factors, so yeah it was pretty bad.
I know it is terrable what you are going through. It is unfortunate that your power grid can not support the sudden demand for more power. Ontario population almost 15,000,000 has closed down all its coal fired electricity generating stations to help do our part in combating the possible destruction of our planet.

yeah... I didn't bother responding because it doesn't seem like reading the room is their strong suit. I suggested some empathy and they respond by bragging about how cool their city is...??

I'm not going to say that i might of offloaded on a group of vermonters who thought our states predicament was funny.... But I absolutely did and feel 100 percent at ease for doing it yesterday.
ikr I'm frustrated that many non-Texans don't seem to get that it's not about some cold weather; it's about the poor planning and deadly failures in infrastructure. Let's see even the toughest Northerner battle a loss of power, water, and possibly even gas during a freeze. We got thrown to the wolves with both hands tied behind our back.

got a bit innovative and used my hunting hand, boot and body warmers attached to the tank. Wrapped the whole thing with a survival blanket. Finally yesterday found an aquarium heater. Before I was 40hrs out of power. EVERYTHING survived and looks pretty good.

Chill tangs is a very important person in the world of reefing community with lots of knowledge. DAVID (REEDTOPIA) warned us.... i wasted no time. If you spent the amount of time and money as us originals you'd understand more the importance of the worst when its a HOBBY

Those hand warmers have calcium chloride in them, if I remember correctly. That’s the same compound that we use to mix calcium dosing solution. It causes an exothermic reaction as it comes in contact with water and creates a good amount of heat, which can fill on your mixing container when you mix it up.

I didn’t recommend it because the reaction is very short lived. The stuff in the hand warmers seems to have something else in them that slows the reaction and makes it less intense.

??? I’m not sure what you are trying to say in the first 2 sentences... or what you are implying about my reefing history, time and money spent, etc.

Never heard of him. Not sure what “originals” means either.

People went through a tough time in our hobby. We all work hard at our tanks no matter how small or elaborate. No one needs to get on this platform and make anyone else feel worse about how they handled a truly unprecedented freeze in our area.

Telling us about global warming initiatives in Canada was just bizarre.

Ok with global warming it is making the arctic heat up really quick. I am a thousand miles north of you. We have a lot shorter and milder winters now. This is also screwing up the jet stream. North of the jet stream is arctic air. South is warm air. Your winter conditions is probably from the jet stream being south of you which is rare because you are so far south ??? Same as the hurricanes these winter events will occur more often in the future. Believe if you want to or not. This is what science is saying. I believe it because I am seeing it first hand...... ??????

Just because someone is "important" or has seniority doesn't justify being unkind. Literally the top of this forum says to "keep comments positive and constructive"; neither of which were present.

The marsh homepage claims to be "local, welcoming, and friendly". I'm not sure that using one's status, experience, and wealth to gatekeep and excuse uncivil comments is what this community is about.

Also, just because some people joined a hobby later than others doesn't mean the newcomers should be silenced from defending themselves. Last time I checked, this is not a frat house.

We all just went through something that was miserable at best and traumatic at worst. We're just asking for a little compassion and empathy.

and just to add: when my neighbor's pipe burst and flooded his house, the rest of our block went over to help out and clean up. NO ONE lectured the dude on not winterizing his house; now is not the time or place.

This is not a picking on Tangs thread it is a no power thread. I did not mean to insult anybody. It is a general discussion where we exchange our thoughts on the matter. I am doing just that.

Honestly not picking on you, I’m with science on global warming. I think this thread is more about the freeze event and the losses associated with it.

People are emotional, we can do a root cause analysis a bit later.
